Let’s Go Camping!

We spent six days trailer camping at vesuvius Lake, part of the Wayne National Forest. Unlike our last no-day trip, everything in the trailer worked (My Summer, 2017). Having a functional stove and microwave leads to fine summer camping meals! Vesuvius is a low-key campground, very conducive is vegetating. There are small towns, forest trails and a bridge over Vesuvius Lake.

Diabetes accompanies me, of course, but behaves well on camping trips. My walking around the campsite all day works well, re-awakening many muscles and keeping my blood sugar stable. I need less daily insulin overall. The only problem is keeping my insulin potent on 90 degree days. We have our trailer refrigerator, and I carry a small insulated bag with frozen blue-ice-packs in it. I keep my strips in this bag as well.

My husband, Hardy, and Golden Retrievers, Cici and Betsy, and I had a lovely six days. I continue to oppose the Trump Administration’s proposal to drill in the Wayne National Forest, here in Ohio. National Forests belong to We the People! On the way home I wrote the following poem:

Vesuvius

Walk the bridge over
the lake, waves lapping. Ducks preen.
I smile at the sky.

We drank cold cider
watching butterflies circle.
“Our home,” said their wings.

Our Vesuvius,
butterfly days, memories
morphing into dreams.

Forest sites
meant for us, each a refuge,
nature’s gift to us.

The End

Good story and outcome. Thanks for sharing.

You might want to also consider a Frio Wallet - they come in various sizes. Then all you need is water to keep your insulin cool.

FWIW, I used a Frio exclusively on my 4-month cross country bike ride and had great results.

YogaO, I actually bought some Frios a few years ago. I should find them and use them again–there is time left to camp this summer. Thanks.
