Low Blood Sugar

Any of you type 2 diabetics controlled by diet alone ever experience low blood sugar? Yesterday 1 hr 45 mins after breakfast I checked my BS and it was 58!! Not only was it 58 but I had NO symptoms. Is this considered reactive hypoglycemia? I eat the same thing every morning for breakfast but my blood sugar is usually about 74-90 2 hrs later.

I am pretty new to diabetes, diagnosed in January and low blood sugar is pretty scary to me. Should I expect this to happen often? Anyone know how low blood sugar goes before passing out?lol

I did not test again, I ate 2 tblspoons peanut butter and a graham cracker and rechecked 15 minutes later to see if it had come up and my BS was 67.

I have had low blood sugar quite a few times with no symptoms…should I be concerned about this? I’ve read about it and everything that I’ve read about “Hypoglycemia Unawareness” says that usually it is type 1 diabetics that get it.

What you experienced is probably what they call “reactive hypoglycemia.” If you are not insulin dependent and are not taking a sulfonylurea, you should be fine, your body has a natural counterregulation that kicks in to raise your blood sugar. It does this by signalling your liver to produce blood sugar. Although it may seem dangerous, transient numbers in the 50s are sometimes seen and as a diabetic your responses can be sluggish. Often when making changes to medication your body can overrespond. Also if you suddenly active after a meal, that can also trigger it.

That’s what I was thinking. Thanks for the advice and reassurance
