Someone asked for me to post pictures of my new Lauren's Hope medical ID bracelets. Well, it turned into an entire blog post! What are your thoughts on wearing medical ID?
I have a necklace but I don't wear it because the chain sucks (Hoping to get a new one soon though not gonna totally abandon it) ...I have a bracelet too big for me too which I tend to wear if I feel I absolutely need one. Most of the time I'm with my mom or someone else where I think they could say I'm a diabetic if it came down to it. Probably bad but, it's really hard to find one i like. Bracelets are always too big or too little and the necklace has a bad chain.
The bracelets from the place I ordered from are customized, when you order it you put the length you need (it gives info about measuring your wrist) and what you want engraved, and they make the bracelet from there. So I was able to put that I have T1 diabetes, use an insulin pump, have a food allergy, carry an epi-pen, have asthma, and am legally blind. Quite a bit for a little bracelet!
Ironically, as an adult I've never had a diabetes-related emergency. All my emergencies have been other random stuff. But I've still had doctors ask to see my bracelet when they notice it. Will be interesting to see if my new one is noticed as readily as my old one, since I think MedicAlert is a more well-known brand than what I have now.
This is true - although right now I find the emblem annoying when it's hanging below my wrist because it bangs against anything I'm doing. It seems more out of the way when I'm wearing it the "top" of my wirst. I'm trying to adjust to wearing it the other way, though. :) I bought a pretty plain bracelet, too, so it will probably help when I buy a fancier one.
Also, I will say that even when I had a MedicAlert bracelet, in over 20 years no one ever seemed to actually notice it was a medical ID. I only ever had doctors ask to see it, or sometimes people who also wore them would make a comment. Some people actually used to complement me on it and not even realize it was a medical bracelet, even though I usually wore the emblem facing up.
They look great Jen, very pretty… I absolutely feel we should all be wearing them in case of an emergency etc. I got one immediately after I got out of the hospital and then ordered the medic alert engraved ids eventually. It makes me feel safer overall. I have gotten compliments on mine too, most people don't seem to realize it is a medic alert bracelet so I usually tell them.
Hi Jen,
I really enjoyed your blog post about the role of medical ID in your life! Thanks for sharing!
Best wishes,

I have had friends who argue almost aggressively that they don't need one, even though they have serious allergies or other conditions ... I guess that's their choice, but I always feel safer with one. All the people I know who refuse to wear one were diagnosed with whatever they have as adults, although I know a few people who have had bracelets since they were a kid, like me. I wonder sometimes if it's a form of denial when people refuse to wear one, even when living or travelling alone, etc.
