Right now, it is what works. My husband and I are going to be working really hard on my insulin sensitivity through a HCLF diet. It has to get better…or I’m never going to be able to carry a baby So there is that. Oh, I fill my reservoir daily, but I don’t change my site. And I’m calling Medtronic tomorrow about auto mode. Its been a looong time.
I live in Indiana – don’t have work again tomorrow because hell is busy freezing over!
It is possible that is part of the reason. Always using the same site can increase the amount of scar tissue (or something like that). I know that it is sometimes hard to find enough sites when you need to insert both the sensor and infusion set, so you may need to try of the alternative sites (you can ask your doctor about that).
This is great information. Thanks for sharing. Can you please help clarify the timing for the calibrations vs. entering BG? You mentioned “different schedules”, and then listed 3 times of day.
I’m frustrated with Auto Mode and searching for any suggestions out there in the T1 community. My goal is to train my pump to keep me at/under 120 bg. Not sure if that’s possible. I’m praying for a new/updated algorithm… Meanwhile I will work with what I have.
The timing is doing them at the same time. What you do not do at this time is the bolus. Let the calibration finish first, that way the bolus is not affecting your BG while it is calibrating. If your BG is above the desired level, it will say a bolus is recommended, so just let it do that, but still wait until calibration and the correction bolus finish before doing the meal bolus. But in many cases this will not be the case anyway, because what I mean by different schedules is not doing the BGs at meal times. Instead, pick times to do a BG & calibration that are appropriate (not near eating or other activities that may have significant effects on your numbers), and do the BG & calibration then. And at meal time (or snack, or any other food), just enter the carbs for a bolus without doing a BG. If your CGM shows your number as being significantly high (for no known reason) and you need to do a correction bolus, do a BG so that the Bolus Wizard can calculate an appropriate bolus, but don’t use this BG to calibrate (significantly high numbers should be avoided for calibrating when possible).
I believe that is called the 780g (if you want to stick with Medtronic) which is due out no sooner than April 2020 and my opinion Summer 2021 is more likely for full launch of the 780g.
And of course you have to wait years for a full hardware replacement just to get a firmware update because: reasons. Don’t you wish smart phones and computers worked the same way?
Thanks Tim35! That’s new news to me. I just joined this forum and have already learned stuff!! I wonder if a Dr can write “medically necessary” letter to get a patient eligible for early upgrade? After going on the 670G, my A1C has increased 0.5 and I can’t get it down in Auto Mode. (It’s been a year)
That’s the reason why my endo won’t recommend the 670G for someone already in good control. The supposed convenience of not having to pay so much attention to dosing is lost because A1c will inevitably rise. The fixed BG target too high. He’s not an Medtronics fan in any case, but especially so when it comes to the auto mode.
I’m anxious to see Tandem’s Control-IQ algorithm. It might very well suffer from the same drawback unless the target is lower or variable.
I am a big fan of the 670G, but that’s because it has brought my A1c down from high 7s to low7s. However, getting it below 7 in automode seems to be a challenge. However, in my case, that may be due to occasional high carb meals involving alcohol.
As I mentioned in a previous post, automode seems to keep me in the 130 +or- range but the occasional lack of carb control keeps my A1c slightly above 7.
When I feel my BGs are higher then I want (above 135), I will use the fill cannula program to “Bolus” up to a unit of insulin.
Quite possibly.
I am quite encouraged by Tandem’s small change of direction so as to indicate allowing the user to choose (perhaps as simple as a switch on a screen on the X2) between Basal-IQ or Control-IQ.
I think having the choice of the two algorithms would be great and allow people to pick the one which best fits their needs.
Although Control-IQ is almost certainly going to work better for the larger population, there certainly will be a smaller group with very tightly controlled BG who would benefit more from continued usage of Basal-IQ.
Also bear in mind that this upcoming Control-IQ release is “Version 1” of Control-IQ.
Tandem has already publicly discussed the next two iterations of Control-IQ. At this point, they are planning enhancement and revisions to the Control-IQ algorithm at the rate of about one per year.
So, the t:sport would be expected to be launched with Control-IQ v2 with an update available for the X2 for the Control-IQ v2 sometime around Q2 or Q3 of 2020.
There should then be an update for Control-IQ v3 for both the X2 and the t:sport around mid-2021.
So, even if the initial versions of Control-IQ is not the best fit for an individual perhaps the Basal-IQ can continue to work for the person. And then in a year, one could try out the revised Control-IQ algorithm and see if the revisions and enhancements make it a better fit.
I am excited to see how it all pans out for actual launch !!!
You’re examples of the upcoming software updates are why I love the Tandem pump. They can add, change or tweak a feature that may or may not be working quite right through a software update, instead of charging a fee for a new updated pump like the other manufacturer’s do. If, and when Tandem do decide to implement a fee for the future software updates, they will most likely be minimal compared to the fees to upgrade early for new pump.
Were you able to shut off the vibration as well ??
my 670g has kept me awake more than i can tell you (i’m sure you’re aware) so i shut off the “audio” but now it vibrates ALL NITE !! The engineers that program this (little brown nugget) need to:
WEAR IT for 30 days
and
either BE diabetic, OR have a synthesized CGM that throws the same speed /curve ball at them, that WE have.
Please let me know if there is a way to disable audio AND vibration, without lead poisoning or Gallagher’s “Sledge-O-matic”
So i’m not the only one… Likewise, being in Auto Mode I can’t get below 7.1% Thanks for the tip to use “fill cannula” for the bonus insulin. That is brilliant.
Thanks for sharing that. I feel like medtronic added this confirmation feature to every command as a safety feature. How many people had a problem with the old pump that now it takes so many clicks to suspend and restart delivery. I never accidentally did anything on my old paradigm. The menus on this pump drive me crazy. Even the pump rep mentioned in training trying to prompt us. Almost everything you do is going to be in the options menu. My question back was why isn’t it the first item under bolus then? …and why are the Audio options the third item under bolus. If anything should be in option, it seems like audio options should be there. I hate this pump! Oh and thanks for making the clicking sound louder whenever I touch a button. It is at least twice as loud as the paradigm. Did any customer request that feature or complain that they could not tell when a button was pushed. I can feel the tactile click of the button, I do not need to hear it too. Although they may be forward thinking in that knowing we all will soon not have any nerves left in our fingers with the amount BG requested by this pump.
Single most annoying thing to me was the extra confirmation step in doing a bolus. Makes the exact same beep when you arrive at the screen that it makes when you hit to confirm, and I repeatedly mistook that for the “yes I’m delivering the bolus now” beep, not the “you’ve arrived at the ‘do ya really want to do this screen’” beep, and then I’d get timed out. Which wouldn’t be quite so bad if it just took you back to the information you already entered but instead it takes you all the way out and you have to do the whole thing over again. Not such a big deal until you’ve fallen for it, oh I dunno, thirty-forty times or so, then you start feeling like throwing the damn thing at the wall.
I get busy try to do a quick bolus and fall for the white circle as a sign of confirmation I am done. Just like the circle that windows gives when it is working. If I do not feel the vibration that I actually did not enter the bolus completely, then my BG is 300 after a meal. I am giving it a week and going back to the old pump while I pursue getting a new one. I hear the T-Slim Dexcom G6 is a good combo. Does anyone have experience with that? Of course if they did, they would not be reading this site.
