Metformin the problem?

I have been feeling sickish for the last week now. I’m on metformin 1000 x1 a day. Towards the afternoon I feel not so good. Spacey and disconnected. I have been low carb for almost 4 years almost since diagnosis. I’m T2 Just not sure what to think about the almost nauseous feeling along with the weird feeling. Have been taking metformin for about 5 months and never had any problems. I have upped my carbs tho my numbers stay good 116 1 hr pp fate a lunch of nachos, tho a small portion I felt physically like I was going to have a high number. Any ideas? I love this site and have been learning a lot. Thanks all!

I hope this isn’t a dumb question, but have you taken your blood sugar when you are having this feeling? You mention one hour pp blood sugars which are excellent, but what about in the afternoon when you have the symptoms? Perhaps you are going low in between meals?

Yes I have and they have been okay. I felt that way before I took the pp and I toolkit again at 2hr pp and it was 106 and I have been feeling like this since a little while after eating. Thanks for the absolutely non dumb question! I have thot I was low too and tested and been within the 80-100 except once at 71

I have had different effects Knorris from different manufactures. The two main ones are Tevea and Zyphus pharmaceuticals. I have had better luck on the Teva. These are both generics. I dont seem to get as good a result with the extended versions. As to side effects I feel like an odd ball as I get more constipated than the runs which is the normal reaction. You can always have your Dr write you the prescription for the real stuff glucaphage too.

I would talk to the Dr and see if you can lower the dose. Everyone is differnt and you may be able to get by with 500 a day.

I’m on Metformin 500g 2 x day (called Diabex XR here) and was also constipated. I changed dr recently and he said you should take Metformin with the evening meal once a day, so now I take the two tablets at night and the constipation has eased considerably. Hopefully when I get into this new regime all will be well. When I first took these pills I felt really spacey and very odd, a little nauseous too. Luckily that all quietened down.

Pastelpainter did your dr tell you why in the evening? I like the why’s of things! I will try it tomorrow well maybe I’ll do 1 in the am and 1 in the pm then 2 pm the next day.
Pauly I have a new batch of pills but was feeling this way for awhile prior! I thot I was going to sail right thru the metformin problems. Bummer lol

Knorris - after five months on Metformin 2x a day I started to feel weird in the afternoons. The doc checked out my BP and we found that mine drops when I stand suddenly. While she checked for other issues, we found no cause. I suspect my body is getting used to the medication, change in amount of carbs I eat and lower sugar levels. But, do not know for certain. After buying a BP machine and recording my BP and Sugar when I felt bad, I found low BP - sugars around 90-110. No clue why still and it seems to have subsided. I am sorry you are having this trouble. Good luck and keep me posted? Best, Denise

Just took my bp 156/79 ! Not low!

Just took a 1/2 hr fast walk BP 135/70 guess I’d best listen to you all and get off my butt!

Diabex XR (Metformin) is a slow release pill and it is better to take them in the evening rather than in the morning and the evening like I had been doing, because the drug Diabex is not slow release. You could ask your dr. about this. My dr. said they release in my body from evening to evening full dose and work better at controlling the blood sugar like that.

I have played with mine. 1 in the am and 1 in the pm and then both at night. From what I’m seeing for me anyway is the morning time works best for me. But I will test it again to see. Thanks!
