First Lady Michelle Obama to Launch Anti-Obesity Program for Kids on Aol Health

By Jeff Mays on Jul 9th 2010 3:30PM

Michelle Obama is tackling childhood obesity with the launch of the nationwide Let's Move campaign and its new enhanced Website.

Obama will kick off the program Tuesday with a live Web broadcast at 10 a.m. EST onAol Health

The goal of the program is to provide schools, parents and communities with effective ways of tackling the problem so that a majority of kids reach adulthood at a healthy weight within a generation.

The childhood obesity epidemic is an issue of major concern in the African American community. About 11.9 percent of black girls are extremely obese.

The federal government is also embarking on a number of other efforts to reduce obesity, such as redesigning the food pyramid, working with food manufactures to reduce serving sizes, increasing access to healthy food in urban and rural areas, and working to serve healthier school meals.

"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake," Obama said in a statement. "This isn't the kind of problem that can be solved overnight, but with everyone working together, it can be solved. So, let's move."

Obama has made reducing childhood obesity one of her priorities. She broke ground on the White House kitchen garden last year and has used it to facilitate conversations with children regarding healthy eating.

Viewers may submit question to the first lady regarding her initiative ataskmichelleobama@aol.com or during the live broadcast. The broadcast will be streamed live at www.LetsMove.gov and on Aol Health.
