Miracle Noodles and Insulin Pumps

I found in an article in a magazine about miracle noodles www.miraclenoodles.com and how they are supposed to be helpful to diabetics who want to eat pasta. I find pasta to be the one food that I love to eat and still will mess up my blood sugars no matter what I do to fix it. I ordered some of them to try it out, plus the company also makes donations to JDRF which sounded nice to me. I was wondering though if anyone has ever tried these and how you work with the insulin pump when you eat them. It says they have zero net carbs. If you were to eat them completely plain, could it really work as having zero carbs in it? I find that a little too good to be true if I end up liking them at all. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

I am thinking that the zero net carbs only pertains to T2’s…T1’s need to dose for all carbs regardless of fiber. The carbs will just be absorbed slower is my understanding. You might not have a spike, but probably a delayed increase in BS. Knowing (guessing) how much and for how long would be the trick.

I don’t know about this kind, but I have found Dreamfields pasta in the grocery store, and it is low-carb. I don’t know how they work that, but it tastes just like regular pasta, and it doesn’t spike my blood sugar. I’d give your new noodles a try, and if you like them and they don’t mess up your sugars, and if they don’t have alarming amounts of weird ingredients, I’d say cool!

They’re called shirataki noodles and I get them all the time, they’re great! They don’t have any flavor on their own so you need to add a sauce to them but they are incredibly satisfying. I’ve never ordered them from miraclenoodles.com, I just get them from the store in this brand-

The package says <1g of carbs per package so I don't use any insulin for them. I'm a type 1 on shots. They also make those noodles with tofu which adds carbs so I prefer not the tofu ones. They taste virtually the same.

There is a product called Shirataki Noodles that are practically carb free. They supposedly are packed in a “fishy smelling” water which if you rinse off, then the noodles should absorb flavor of the sauce you put on top of the noodles. I would charge for the carbs listed on the package, though, and not listen to advertised claims. One day, if I can find these in the store, I will try them and see. For instance, Dreamfields pasta advertises “5 grams net carbs”. Since my niece has Type 1 diabetes and I give insulin based on the carbs, I charged the carbs listed on the package, minus the fiber. I did not charge 5 grams a serving, as advertised, and, lucky I did not, she was high from these. We use Quinoa pasta now, which is about 40 grams a serving but this pasta goes right through her. She will go lower from eating it, so we give 10 grams of pasta sauce with it for free. Quinoa pasta is not slow-digesting so she does not go high later on from eating it. And, though it is a corn-based and Quinoa-based product, it tastes similar to regular pasta, especially with sauce. Also has more protein.

Thanks Michelle! I was tempted to buy from that site but now’ll just check at the store. I think you just saved me $40!!!

Ellie…double check next time you eat the Dreamfields Pasta. Jenny (I think it was,) on this site warned in another blog that you still have to figure in the carbs, they are just very delayed in being digested. Check your BS a few hours after you eat to make sure it is not spiking later than usual.

Jan…where do you get the quinoa pasta? Can you neice eat the grains as well without a problem?
Thanks.

I just called my mom and asked her to stop by and get some of those Shirataki noodles!
Hopefully they turn out good!

Heh, when I was a new diabetic I used to get excited about these foods.

Now I just bolus a couple extra units of insulin for the real thing and/or exercise a bit harder that day. It is an emotional thing for me- I feel like if I’m wearing a pump and CGM, taking Symlin before every meal, testing 6-8 times a day, working out 4-5 times a week. . .I can have some fracking spaghetti and meatballs!

Oh yay, shiritaki noodles! In the past I’ve purchased the House brand (http://www.house-foods.com/Tofu/tofu_shirataki.aspx) from my local grocery store for about 1.73 or so. You can usually find them in health food stores in the tofu section.

I will say this…they are only like noodle-like in shape. The texture is all together different. It’s a bit…rubbery, but I have found that if I just heat them in a skillet before I boil them they become a bit less rubbery. I haven’t had them since I started on my pump, but the carb amount should be on the back (it’s pretty low). When I ate them while I was on MDI, they never came back to haunt my blood sugar.

Hear Hear!!

I also use the Dreamfield pasta, it has a very low glycemic index and tastes and looks just like regular pasta. I also found the red wine lowers my BG. So what is better than a plate of spaghetti and a glass of wine! Love it!

They say that you learn something new everyday!! I have never heard of shiritaki noodles, but I will now check them out!!

Thanks for the info and ideas!!

I’ve used Miracle Noodles & they do nothing at all to my BG. I’m Type 1 & don’t even count these in carb counts. It’s completely indigestible fiber. They’re like Asian noodles, which works great for stir frying. I make a low carb peanut sauce, throw in some shrimp, scallions & fresh grated ginger–delicious.

Fiber has no carbs. They’re made from pure fiber & have no carbs, zero, zip, zlich, nada. Been eaten in Asia for years. I eat them all the time & need no insulin to cover it. I’m Type 1 & these noodles have no effect on my BG at all. No spikes, no delayed increase, no effect at all. Might not everyone’s cup of tea tastewise, but I like them.

Based on this post, I ordered some of these “Miracle” noodles. They are not cheap after you pay shipping…about $3/7 ounces. But as advertised, they did not raise my BG a bit. I rinsed them according to directions and added some alfredo sauce and popped them in the microwave. If you can get past the “mouth feel” thing, they are OK. Would i order them again? No. I’d rather get some whole wheat pasta for $.50, bolus for it, and take a walk after dinner. I’ve got 5 bags left in my fridge if anyone wants them…

how much? would they make it to NC?

OK these noodles are my new addiction! I didn’t like the ones with tofu, they had a weird mouth feel. The regular ones without tofu do not effect my BG at all and have a good noodle texture. I will make a cup of low sodium chicken bullion, put some rinsed off noodles in there, and viola! Homemade no carb ramen noodles! It is a great snack and I do not have to take insulin to eat this. I have found it is very important to rinse the noodles off with cold water or else they taste fishy.

I am so glad this discussion came up or would have never known about these noodles. My super picky husband loves them too!

where did you buy them Suzanne? did you order them off the internet?
