VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES OF NEL PEACH
G. Kyllo: Anytime an MLA in this House is asked what makes their home riding great, I have no doubt that one of the first things that come to mind is people — local residents who exemplify kindness, generosity and dedication to their community.
In Salmon Arm we are lucky to have Petronella Peach. Nel Peach is known as a volunteer extraordinaire. Diagnosed with diabetes 30 years ago, she's used her experience to become a passionate advocate for people with diabetes, bringing attention to the issues they face on a daily basis.
I'll give you a rundown of some of the activities that Nel has been involved with. She's a tireless volunteer for the Canadian Diabetes Association. She has served as the regional chair for the association's interior B.C. region. She's been one of the top fundraisers for the association's interior summer surge. She's also been an impressive fundraiser for Team Diabetes and has run several of their national and international marathon events.
She's an active public speaker, sharing her diabetes journey with others. In 2010 she carried the Olympic Torch in Salmon Arm, nominated for the honour by my MLA predecessor, Mr. George Abbott.
She's won numerous accolades, including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the Canadian Diabetes Association's regional medal, a regional service award, and a national volunteer award.
Did I mention that this hard-working, determined, young, inspiring member of my community turned 73 years old today? In keeping with her generous spirit, Nel is throwing a birthday party, but instead of gifts, she'll collect donations for her next Team Diabetes event in Amsterdam on Sunday, October 20.
I want to wish Nel Peach a very happy birthday and thank her for her tireless efforts to raise awareness and funds to support the diabetes community. Nel is truly amazing, and I wish her all the best as she continues to make positive contributions to our local community.

Kind regards,
Randi Gill

Helpful with Advocating for All People With Diabetes ?? ...that's the Aim !!

http://www.tcsamsterdammarathon.nl/parcours-8-km-2/

New for 2013: The TCS 8 km goes through the heart of the Rijksmuseum , the famous Passage that connects Amsterdam-Centrum Amsterdam and South together. A unique experience for the many thousands of runners from home and abroad. This is a long-cherished wish of the organization Le Champion, to sports, art and culture to bring in Amsterdam, in fulfillment closer together.

Got my airline tickets today :) ...leave Vancouver October 9 , with my buddy Rita from Vancouver (aka the Amsterdam Hoofers !!) , are home hosted by my College friend Dia in Purmerend , then to Amsterdam Hotel with about 60 other Team D participants on Oct. 18 till Oct. 22 ...a whirlwind trip !!!

Please let us know how did the event go, Nel!

Evidence ...sadly I did not get into the Amsterdam Stadium , my pace too slow by about 3-4 minutes ...the Elite Marathon runners were about to arrive :) ...I did receive my number 12 medal and was overjoyed , when I saw friends and 1960 classmates holding up Canadian flags and some were wearing Canadian labelled clothing ! No shame , that I consider myself a better fund raiser for the cause , than runner :) . My BG's relatively OK , even if I was somewhat surprised that the number went up during the first 15 minutes ...the unexplainable ( sp??) stress ?? Wearing a CGM sensor helped .Minor weight loss during the training period was slightly evident ..jeans less tight , lol . Running by the College I attended in 1960 was very moving for me ! Our team of full , half and 8 km marathoners was smaller than originally thought ...some did not complete their fund raising goals .Team Diabetes asked me to deliver the Inspirational Talk after the Celebration dinner on Oct 21 ..unprepared and from the heart :) I like to Thank all my supporters from across the Big Blue sea, from across the Line , my Canadian supporters and my Dear Hubby , who keeps hanging in with the traveller !!

The Amsterdam Hoofers :) aka Rita and Nel ...Rita does not live with diabetes
