New member - husband has diabetes 2

The other day, my sister-in-law yelled at DH and told him he eats too much and he’s too fat. DH is starting with the diabetes dept in his hospital next week, moved from another dept. If he feels he’s blamed by his new doctor, I’m afraid he’s going to blow a fuse!! He’s not that much overweight now anyway.

DH was diagnosed 3.5 years ago. Both of us were obese in middle age (we’re 59), but I got off scot free (touch wood). His ethnic group is different and he was born 3 months premature to a poor mother. I think those two differences may play into it, too.

Don’t know where I’m going with this except I’m pretty nervous about next week.

Welcome to our community! Diabetes is difficult to live with alone. I hope that this community provides support that will help you and your husband!

I hope that next week will do well – let us know how it goes!

Hello Colette! Diabetes is pretty taxing not only to d person diagnosed but also to those who share their lives with. I hope you find patience to cope with the situation and a community to talk to.

Hang in there Colette. Understand that Type 2 diabetes is a complex disease and there are other factors going on here than just weight. Many in the medical community fall into the same trap as your sister in law and see it in very simple terms.
One of the best things you can do is to educate yourself about your husbands condition. This will help you cope with this. There are many posts here on TU that are inspirational and will help you on your journey. Good luck.

Take it moment by moment Colette. Yes, it IS overwhelming at first…but things will get better, and start falling into place. I must say though, it’s great that you’ve found TuDiabetes…there is SO much support here, so much info…and so many friends to be made!
luv…linda

HOLD TIGHT COLETTE!!! He will DO THIS!!!

Welcome to the community Colette. Type2 diabetes can be brought about by other factors other than weight and obesity… I was 125 lbs (at 5"4) when first diagnosed 3 years ago. Be strong… this is when he needs help, understanding and support from people who cares… It can be overwhelming for both of you at first…but you and him, together, can make a difference. In the meantime, try to educate yourself with Type 2 diabetes…this will best equipt you with necessary undestanding on how to help your husband manage it… Im glad you found the community =)

Thank you so much for all your kind comments. The reason I’m here is that I want to learn the best way to support him emotionally. Physically, my role is to provide him with the best food I can. He is slightly disabled and doesn’t cook, so that’s the only concrete area where I can contribute. He doesn’t want to research deeply into his condition, so I try to, as my reading has sometimes resulted in my spotting where the hospital was neglecting to check things which were important. In a way, I hope he doesn’t like the new doctors because there are plenty of far better hospitals near us, and he says he’ll change if he doesn’t like the new people!! I don’t like the hospital he goes to now. Thank you so much again.
