Oooh y’all – I feel some kinda rough today. I thought it would pass by now, but I’m struggling!
Pregnancy at 34 is definitely rougher, and quite a bit different than pregnancy at 20!!!
And I’m from Georgia, hence the “y’all” I threw out there lol.
On the upside, it would seem I’m getting a little better control over my bg #'s – I’ve had to up my basal by 4 units since I’ve been pregnant - so my insulin requirements are already going up and I’m only a few weeks along.
@stoner are you two guys close? or is georgia the size of germany?
@kerland831 i wish you good luck with finding your obgyn! Might be worth discussing his/her birth plan/ideas, as we had a member a few months back telling us her obgyn wanted to do a c-section at 38 weeks without real big reasons other than her having T1. which sounds a bit over the top. so if you don’t want a surprise like that at 35 weeks it might help discussing that (and a ton of other stuff) before committing. but i am sure you already have a big list to discuss!!!
good luck as always!!!
I am in the metro Atlanta Area @kerland83. (@swisschocolate Georgia is a big state )
You will automatically be put in the high risk category because of your T1. It will take a lot of work to keep your glucose levels under control as the pregnancy progresses but totally doable. Be prepared to be poked, prodded, andexperience multiple test all throughout the pregnancy.
I have had two children, but it was in the early 90s and the treatment options have changed so much since my pregnancy (pumps had just came out), so I won’t offer much advice but plenty of encouragement. You can do this!
Such an exciting time for you and your family.
As a side note, I have three siblings…who are respectively, 16 years, 14 years, and 8 years older than me.
Some days trying to control pregnant blood sugar levels is like trying to fire an arrow at a target…while riding a roller coaster…in the dark. I like things to be cut and dry, action and reaction. Wouldn’t it be nice if diabetes was that simple!!!
Basal dosage just keeps on creeping up, and bolus dosage is only effective if I’m eating carbs my body likes (still learning what those are). So far, foods with grains and flour are the worst for me (rice, cereal, bread, I even broke down and ate a doughnut one day last week…BAD idea!!! oatmeal and grits seems ok though??? idk) – and a plain old sugary popsicle or candy raises me pretty minimally and is easy to control with insulin. Waiting on a pump–hopefully it will help with all this.
I’m just doing the best I can with how new all this is, and learning and making adjustments as I go. Goal is to keep my A1C where it needs to be, so both baby and I come out the other end of this happy and otherwise healthy!

LOL! Germany it is not, although I do love beer and sausage (of course no beer while prego!)
I’m 2 hours south of ATL @Stoner – right in the middle of the state in a small town about 25 miles south of Macon. My dad lives in Roswell (much closer to metro Atlanta than I am) – love The Mill – farm to table restaurant there – so good!
