This site is great, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 26 years ago at age 14 with a suger of 22.2. I was injecting on day 2 after diagnosis and have tried to meet every challenge head on while trying to live a normal life. I was educating myself on the omnipod which I hope to be using by mid march. I've delayed the process of getting a pump in ontario when I discovered a new gen pod was being released. I've never considered a pump because of the line set and my lifestyle.
Humalog/Lantus glargine is my regime. When I discovered the omnipod only 5 months ago I wondered why I had not checked on the pump scene in some time. I googled "omnipod blog" looking for more education and best practice tips and it led me here.
I've forgotten how rare type 1 is being only 10% of the diabetic population. At 40 I am the youngest of 5 siblings. There are no type 1 diabetics on my Mothers side. My grandfather on my Dads side had maturity(type 2) onset and lived to 92. I have hypothyroidism.
2 of my 3 sisters(46&50) have hypothyroidism as well. My brother(49) was diagnosed with lupus nephritis 6 years ago. There is definitely an auto immune gene issue in the family but I am a firm believer in environmental factors as well. Whether it was antibodies that mistook my beta cells for enemies or an allergic spin off from drinking milk and consuming dairy products I became diabetic and have never looked back. Although I still consume the odd glass of milk I do not drink it like I used to and I casually try to con my boys out of consuming milk like water. I often ask them this:
"why are humans the only animal on the planet that consumes another animals breast milk through to maturity and beyond?". It didn't surprise me when I read of a newly diagnosed type I juvenile diabetic who's dairy intake was restricted and his beta cells fully recovered and were able to provide his body with insulin. I'm Looking forward to connecting, learning and finding coping strategies for the challenges that come with being a diabetic!
