One year post T2 diagnosis I’m still trying to figure out the basics and could use a bit of help. This I do not understand:
AM fasting 6.2 (112); 30 g breakfast then 30 min workout right after. 1 hr post-prandial 4.8 (86). (yay! rarely see such numbers these days) BUT two hours later, pre-snack, 6.4 (115). ??!!
Why would it go back up to 6.4?! Very confused! How do I keep it down at post-exercise levels?
Ligetia, Two days have gone by and no posts to your question! I guess we just don’t have a clue!
I’d call your fluctuations rather minimal. If exercise reduces your BG to 4.8 when you’ve eaten, be happy. Your body is simply not dealing with that level of exercise all day long, so it’s not going to stay down.
Don’t give it a thought! Your levels are very modest.
Be extremely happy that exercise can help when it does!
It’s really great that you can eat 30 g and not have a wild BG swing.
In most cases your BG will 60 - 90 minutes postprandial. If your are starting your exercise right after your meal then working out thirty minutes, it’s very possible your body is still breaking down the carbs, particulary 30. I usually wait 30 - 45 minutes after I eat to start my workout. That way I know my exercise routine will intersect my Bg peak.
Ligetia, i was on my iPhone earlier so could only post part of my response. A couple other things to consider…
Depending on what you ate, you could see a later spike. For example, a meal with a lot of fat can slow the dumping of your stomach into the intestines resulting in later spike.
Also, depending on the exercise, your liver can dump glucose during your workout. This usually occurs during a strenuous workout as the body can go into fight or flight mode.
115 postprandial is pretty good at 2 hours. at 3 does does it go back below 100?
Bubbaluv, thanks for your input. Yes, I think it’s possible my body is still breaking down the carbs since I’m eating low glycemic. Breakfast is usually all-bran with almond milk, an eggwhite omelet and a small piece of fruit. (Without exercise immediately afterward my numbers would be through the roof!) But my workouts are not all that strenuous - maybe 25-30 minutes on an elliptical machine, heart rate does get up to maybe 75% of max, but that’s only for the middle 15 minutes or so.
A diabetic nurse also said it could be the liver dumping glucose after the workout has ended. Never checked 3 hrs postprandial, but my fasting is usually 100-105, rarely under 100 so no, probably not below 100 at 3 hrs!
(Maybe I should eat something more after my workout so the liver has something to work on?)
