Newly Diagnosed..what should I expect on sick days?

I am a newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic controlled by diet/exercise. I am just curious to know what to expect whenever I get sick? How high should I expect my BS to go? What is your sick day diet plan? Would really appreciate any feedback

Well its differs from person to person. I need more insulin when im fighting a virus or whatnot, and lots of fluids. That usually keeps any BG readings from getting too high. But thats me. Your sugars may remain fine during sickness. I hate to say but the only real way to test is to get sick…Then test your sugars to see how your body is reacting.

Infections can be a serious. If you begin running high as a Type Two dont hesitate to talk to your dr. My dr has told me if I am running above 130 and its not coming down during sickness he is there to help with insulin. Read the Diabetic Solution by Dr Richard Bernstein too for a more in depth checklist of what you need to know.

Tooth infections, foot issues, cuts and sores, flu , etc. You need to read up on this for your game plan when sickness comes.

Above 130 or did you mean 230?

I have not seen mine go up to high. but the body definitly knows when it is going through stress. the highest i hit was 150. My self i keep some gator aid or such around to have if i am unable to eat solids. You should do fine and being aware of how your body feels is the best indicator. welcome and take care Bruce

If you feel like your coming down with something, talk to your doctor right away before it gets to serious.Your doctor may tell you to check your bg’s more often. The numbers differ with everyone.

Test a lot & keep well hydrated. Even slight dehydration can raise BG. I drink a lot of water & broth. Usually I have no appetite,so I stick to water & broth. I’m a Type 1 & my numbers have gone over 250 when sick. Had high BG when I injured my back also.

No one can tell you how high your BG will go or for how long.

Thanks for all the good advice I really appreciate it as this is all new to me. So when you are sick and your BG is high do you eat your normal diet or do you eat low carb to keep it from going even higher??

Well usually 100-130 carbs per day

Best to eat low carb when sick to prevent going higher when sick, especially since you’re not on meds or insulin. Even with insulin, it’s often hard to lower BG with an infection or virus

No running around the block when sick:) Maybe T2s don’t rocket out of control like T1s when ill. In my former life I used to tough it out because I avoid taking antibiotics, but now I call the doctor if I’m sick for more than a couple of days.

An interesting thing is that antibiotics lower my BG to the point where I don’t need insulin, or just very little. My doctor said this wouldnt effect BG–ha.

A simple cold close to doubled the amount of insulin i needed, and my BG was still running in the 200 range the whole time. Every person is different though, so it might affect you less, the same, or maybe even more. It just depends on the person.

Has anyone tried exercising while ill? Does it raise or lower your BG? What about just walking?
