my blood sugars have been CRAZY!!! thursday they were in the 300’s most of the day so i went to the doctor yesterday and she upped my insulin and gave me some medicine for my sore throat and stuffy nose. yesterday they were in the 200’s most of the day and i went to bed last night around 630 and woke up at 730 and it was 165. just checked it again and it was 237. what the heck!!! why does our blood sugar go crazy while we’re sick? i checked my ketones and it was negative. im to the point that im so afraid to eat because i get so frustrated with my bs and i cant get it normal. HELP PLEASE!! i need some words of encouragement.
Brea… infections create havoc with our bg. And anxiety and stress cause it to go even more haywire… Try to relax and rest, Take lots of water…(helps with both infection and high blood sugar). It is also advisable to test often…
Hope you will feel better soon.
What teena said.
I know it’s just wacky stuff. One thing I find that helps is to keep the fluids coming. If I down lots of water and sugar free stuff I can control BG better when sick.
I eat next to nothing when sick, but even with no food BG climbs from the stress of infection. I’ve taken high doses with not much effect. Like the others, I drink a lot of water. Some antibiotics can also cause BG to rise.
Hope you feel better soon!
The only thing I’ve taken is Benadryl & it didn’t have any effect on my BG. Benadryl isn’t as strong as other meds, though.
I was taking Celestamine before…but Benadryl does the work pretty good too. It took my doctor and I awhile before we found my allergens…a zillion skin patch test =) You can also try humidifiers and air purifiers or have you ever heard of “Saline Nasal Rinse”?.. These usually helps when allergens are wind borne or irritants due to extreme weather/climate change.
thanks for the help everyone! ill keep the fluids flowing!
It is normal when I had the H1N1 virus 2 years ago my BG could not be lowered below 200 regardless of the amount of insulin injected. Good be that the body uses high BG as a defense or it it the stress.
i too had H1N1 a couple years ago. my bs was in the 400’s and wouldnt drop. was hospitalized for a couple days. i was so miserable. im starting to feel better and my bs is going back to normal so thats good!!
