Yesterday I had the most amazing surprise,the insulin I use (Novolog)) is no longer on the list of medicines that Blue Rx insurance will coverI will need to have my doctor fill out papers to get it covered. We can't blame The Affordable Care Act for this as it hasn't started yet.
Your other option might to see what rapid action insulin IS covered, for example Humalog or Aprida.
Couple years ago, my insurance switched me from Humalog to Novolog, and they were mostly the same. I've heard others say their insurance did the same, or switched the other way. I could have stayed with Humalog, but it would have been much more expensive.
I've also heard Aprida is available with a coupon/card for very low cost or possibly free, but I have not tried it. Aprida is supposed to be faster than Novolog and Humalog.
Novolog has a RX card too. I think it makes the monthly cost around $25.
