I think I remember Shosh and JRTPup being on the ADA or JDRF message boards too? Those were moderately useful although JDRF heavily weighted towards concerns of non-D parents with D-kids. (I was once a D-kid but it’s been a good chunk of a century!)
Oh my gosh, Shoshana was an amazing woman! You are indeed fortunate to have had her as your mother! What a bright light she was. She was so kind and thoughtful.
Yes, she was indeed. I think I remember her as Shoshana75, or some such number.
I’m old. Does this count??
i am glad alot of old admins are gone. some were not good people and felt “special” about their little boost in power. I also noticed if there was a Type 1 advancing authority over a Type 2 that was very problematic also. Glad to see you back!!!
Wanna say hello to all the Old Timers of the original Tudiabetes… This would be back in the 2000’s.
Hello
Hi Timothy I read your post frequently. This is a great site as I’ve learned a lot but I have only been on this site for 3 to 4 years.
I am a hold over from the Lehigh university days. Then the closed it down and started here.
I actually preferred the old format, but I’m used to this now.
Not sure exactly but I think it’s been at least 20 years
Hello, always good to have old / new acquaintances
Hi all! Although I’m still a newbie here(still in the denial stage of type 2) so I don’t visit much, I feel part of the old-timers group because I know some people here remember my Mom(Shoshana). So …just wanted to say how thankful I am for this group. You all were like a second family to my Mom while I lived far away and I haven’t forgotten…Best Wishes to you all.
And expressed how much she was missed and remains an inspiration.
Welcome here🤗 I knew and loved your mom, she was great💕
Raises hand–I remember Shoshana from these parts very well. A remarkable woman with a remarkable story. So glad to have you here @HL1 !
Thanks
If only I had listened more to Mom. I’ve had Type II for years now, am taking Metformin, yet am still in denial. Mom was such an advocate for Diabetes. I think I need this group more than ever now. Hope to spend some time here exploring
Your mom meant so much to all of us. We love her and will always. I would say welcome to the community, but you are and have been a member in high standing for many years. Even if you did not know it or us very well.
Sad to see you here, but not surprising.
I have used your mother’s story (as I understood it) many times as an example of how far the treatment of diabetes has progressed in the last few decades.
What first caused me to notice your mother’s posts was her screen name. My eldest daughter is sometimes (in English) Suzanne, has occasionally been Susan, has never been Sue or Suki, but is almost always Shoshana, which I think is pretty rare in English.
Good luck.
M.
Thanks. Unfortunately I havent really been getting any diabetic specific care. My GP just gave me a perscription for glucomen and a meter and I have been on my own.
Mostly I try to follow the same diet as my mother’s(yes, from years ago. Has much changed?), eat balanced meals, get exercise, test every morning and occasionally before and after(one hour then two) other meals to see how different foods(and exercise) effect me. Can you recommend an alternative course of action? Should I be seeing an Endocrinologist? A lot of the info here is awesome but confusing . As I mentioned before I have recently figured out that I am in denial of sorts so I have not really been doing the research all along. Although my A1C has never been over 7 and my diet seems to be working for me in keeping my bgl within range…Im not getting any younger and would like to do this the right way.
So glad I decided to return to this group. Hope it sticks this time. HUGS
I am not sure what glucomannan is is that some type of metformin? I would definitely go to an endocrinologist if it were me.
My neighbor and close friend of 94 years just passed away about two weeks ago. She was a type two for many years and so was her father. Her father was on insulin for a long time and seem to have a worse course. She was never on insulin unless she was in the hospital etc. I talked with her a lot about it when I was diagnosed with type one and I’m guessing because of her age even at that time they did not want to put her on insulin. I know her A1c was way too high like eight or something. But all she ever took was metformin at home. However she lived a very long life but she did have dementia at the end also for 3-4 years which got worse over time she had problems with short-term memory and other issues.
She also had heart failure which her oldest son told me about after the funeral I did not know about that I don’t know when it started- if that was also an effect of diabetes etc.
she had a UTI and was hospitalized briefly before this happened, it was not properly treated and she developed sepsis at home- she was hospitalized again but she never really was the same after that because she had damage to her heart from the sepsis. They sent her home on hospice and she died about three weeks after that peacefully at home. I still have questions about what happened with her treatment.
