Omnipod Tips for a Newbie. :)

The old pods did not seam to prime well. If you can see liquid in the cavity where the canula is after priming that works well. If no liquid is seen then it may not have primed well. This can sometimes cause a high after changing the POD. The new style PODs do seam to prime well. Daughter has been on the POD for three years and Early on it was tying. Its worth sticking with the POD. We did have a lot of Highs in the beginning. Most all highs seamed to be right after the POD change. Now we don't have those problems.

So Tiffernee do you like the omnipod? I am getting ready to get one for my three year old son who has been diabetic for a year now?

Thanks,
Robin

Hey Kenneth I am getting ready to put my three year old son on the omnipod. I am drawn to it because it is tubeless, so do you like the pod?

Hi I have been on the Omnipod for 1 year now.....I have to say I absolutely love it. It gives me so much freedom, I don't have to worry about get caught up in tubing. I will never go back on multiply needles and I have much better control. I was nervous at the beginning to go on the pump, but once my diabetes educator and myself set up the appropriate settings it has been fabulous....if you are interested once you get used to the pods which probably won't take you long at all, check out this website for bands that you can wear for extra protection ( I wear mine while I sleep) and fashion. www.magikbands.webs.com

I love it! I would suggest also getting him on the Dexcom CGM. The Omnipod is def a game changer, but I felt like the CMG really put me in charge of my daily control and brought my A1C down almost an entire point in just 3 months. Keep us updated on how you like it. It will take a while to get the settings adjusted, but just take good notes, do your basal testings be on top of it and youā€™ll love it!

Thank you...

Thanks so much for your input....

My three year old recently went on omnipod and I'm having issues with it falling off like when bathing or swimming help .....

I had a similar problem when I would go running or hot yoga. Try Skin Tac skin barrier wipes. It really holds them on and if you get a piece that peels up, you can keep the one you used in a ziplock and just swipe it under the loose edge and it will restick. When youā€™re ready to do a pod change, just wipe the tape down with rubbing alchohol, wait a minute or 2 and itā€™ll slide right off. Also check out those magic bands everyone keeps talking about. They would be useful for an active or overly sweaty day and they can make them in any size you need. Good luck!

Hi all,
I feel very lucky to have found this cite! Iā€™ve been navigating it for about 3 weeks(thatā€™s how long Iā€™ve been on the omnipod)and I must tell you, you folks are great! Iā€™ve had T1 for 30 years. 5-7 injections daily, until now!! Woohoo!
Question: is there a way to stop an active IOB if Iā€™m going low or must I eat my way through it?
Thanks

Hi! Welcome. I have not found a way to do that, but if I find that Iā€™m falling too fast (Iā€™m also on dexcom CGM now, so I can watch it happening) or I go low, I suspend my basal for a little while if I donā€™t want to eat. If Iā€™m already low, I will treat mildly (5-10 carbs) and suspend too. Hope that helps!

just wondering, how long do you suspend for, it you suspend and then restart pump does that activate the insulin right away? Once we've bolused that IOB is in there, once the pod says bolus is done, correct?

Once the insulin is on board, you canā€™t take it back but if you suspend your basal it will give your body the chance to catch up without feeding the insulin. It depends on how long I think I need it suspended. If Iā€™m falling fast and still have a ton of IOB, I wil suspend for an hour but I would say start with half an hour and test (or check your cgm) and go from there. When youā€™re on a pump your ā€œlong actingā€ and ā€œfast actingā€ are the same thing because you get the slow drip of the basal. Play with your settings. Try reducing your basal in a temp basal when exercising with IOB or suspending when over bolused.

Sarah, I have been using the Omnipod for almost 5 years now and been on insulin most of my life. I really love the new pods.

Here is how the suspend works and how to suspend insulin delivery

If you have a severe low blood sugar you may need to suspend insulin delivery.
ļæ¼ļæ¼
Turn on the PDM.
Press the "Home" button, then select "Suspend".
ļæ¼ļæ¼ļæ¼ļæ¼
Enter the length of time the suspension should last (minimum 0.5 hour, maximum 2.0 hours), then press "Enter". Press "Confirm".

The Pod will beep every 15 minutes until the end of the suspension period. At the end of the suspension period, a Pod advisory alarm will occur. At this time, turn the PDM on and press "OK" to resume the active basal program

If you need to suspend longer you can take out the batteries in the PDM. But I would not advise it for long periods of time. I would treat the low that way you will not forget to put the batteries back in due to being busy doing other things.

Once you turn it back on and press "OK" it will start off where it left off.

Also I use the following on my skin to protect it and the pods fits just perfect: You can find them on eBay or your local drug store. (cheeper on eBay)

3Mā„¢ Tegadermā„¢FILM Transparent Dressing STERILE LATEX FREE SEALED They come in BOX's OF 100 Part number: 1624W 6 cm x 7 cm (2 3/8 inch x 2 3/4 inch)

Tegaderm Transparent Dressing is a sterile, waterproof, clear, thin film dressing. Tegaderm Dressing can be applied over I.V. devices, clean skin or wounds, and provides a breathable bacterial barrier to outside contaminants.

You can also suspend for longer than 2 hours by setting the temp basal to ā€œoffā€. I use ā€œskin Tacā€ wipes to keep the pods from wanting to come off (you can also seal the used wipe in a ziploc for peel ups before its time to change your pod)

Iā€™m not quite sure what IOB means. I know what the acronym stands for, but Iā€™m vague on the logistics. Letā€™s say Iā€™m at 80bg. There is 2.0 IOB. Am I going to go low? Is the IOB still to be absorbed?
Also, ā€˜Durationā€™? I use humalog and my tech set it for 4 hr duration. I want to set it to 3hr, because Iā€™m staying high too long. If I shorten the duration, does it condense the delivery?

IOB means insulin on board. That means the insulin that is still racing thru your body (for that 4 hours). If you are 80bg & steadily dropping & still have 2.0units on board, then yes, you probably will go low. And the setting of 4 hours duration just means how long your insulin stays coursing thru your body. If you are staying high for long periods of time if night be due to what you are eating (i.e. High fat meal, possibly mixed with too many carbs). Try playing with extended boluses and see if that helps. Everyone is different so itā€™s hard to say what with work for you, but try a few things and keep a close eye on it to see what works and what doesnā€™t.

This is good, Tiffernee. Thank you! Iā€™m just starting to feel comfortable pumping. Iā€™ll play around with the suspend Basel.

What do most omin pod users use as insulin? Humalog or Apidra? I was on Humalog for over a year. Dr put me on Apidra a few months ago. I dont think i have as good control.

thanks

Started on Humalog but due to insurance reasons I'm on Novolog about 6 months ago and don't see a difference.
