Ontario Assistive Devices Program question!

Hi all! I’m new to TuDiabetes but definitely not new to diabetes (I’ve been type 1 since I was 11… 13 years now!) I have had the Animas Ping for 2 1/2 years. I am getting a (probably refurbished) “new” one tomorrow as my current one’s screen appears to be dying or malfunctioning somehow! This whole thing has got me thinking… I heard that the ADP program in Ontario (Canada) no longer covers a replacement pump every 5 years… how do you go about replacing your pump? Say, if I wanted to change manufacturers, or pump models? Do we just not get that option anymore and ride our current pumps into the ground until they’re super-dead and then… then what? Do we have to pay for a replacement? Should I be prepared for that (because I’m totally, definitely NOT!)?

@clearlyjoyful, welcome!

I am not familiar with Ontario’s ADP program so I don’t have the best information. However, on their web site, it says:
" You can apply for a replacement pump if:
your medical condition has change and the pump no longer meets your needs
the pump is worn out, no longer under the five-year warranty and cannot be repaired at reasonable cost
a quote on the estimated repair costs must be provided
We do not cover costs to replace a lost pump or supplies or to repair pumps or supplies damaged through misuse or neglect."

If there is a change for 2017, I have not been able to find anything published about it.

Possibly worth a phone call to Ontario ADP? I think you can find their contact info here.

I hope everything goes well! Wishing you a wonderful new year - Michel

Interesting… it definitely might be a good idea to call! I get so anxious making phone calls, though, hahaha.

Oh well, not an urgent problem - thanks for your help anyway!

Joy, don’t feel bad about the lack of responses - it only means that not very many people are familiar with Ontario’s ADP. Why don’t you post a more general topic, you’ll have lots of responses, and start to make many connections? It does not take long on this forum - almost everyone is friendly, helpful and compassionate (with good reason of course).

Your friend Michel

I certainly hope this isn’t true. I’m in the middle of applying for a pump and CGM. If it is true, I think my MPP is going to get a letter and maybe a visit from me. I am in St. Catharines, BTW, so this will be imprtant to me, too. Call the Assistive Devices Program. I was a civil servant before I retired. We;were trained to be polite and helpful, and are not allowed to lie to our clients, so you can ask any question you want, and they will probably send you literature on the program, too.

Oh, BTW, I love your forum name.
