Poll Results: How many units of insulin do you get per day?

Don’t panic. Everyone’s body is different. I’ve heard of some type IIs who take upwards of 200 units a day. In general, though, you’ll require less insulin if you exercise more and eat fewer carbs.

50 units per day of Apidra.

A lot of people like low carbs because the smaller amount of insulin necessary makes the mistakes less pronounced. It’s an approach that’s outlined thoroughly by Dr. Bernstein in his books. However, there’s not just one way to take care of diabetes. Do whatever you and your endo think is healthiest for your body and your particular needs.

I was using 90 units of Lantus and about 30 - 50 units of Novolog a day.

Renee, stress does me in also. Too much strenuous exercise & I’m soaring, too.

You’re also young & growing & there’s also those fun female hormones to contend with. More important is how your numbers look.

I was freaking out also, I use 30 units of Lantus and 30-45 units of novolog, but used to use alot more, managed to figure out how to use less

I live with 9 units of Lantus per day + 13 units of Apidra: 4 before breakfast, 4 before lunch, 5 before supper. Tyler,I still take shots . I don’t want the pumps I saw… I’m a small French woman: 1,59m and 50 kg.

I use Humalog in my pump and average 35-45 units per day depending on what I eat for the day. Basals take 24 units of this.

In the mornings, I take 24 Units Lantus. Then, at each meal, I take 3-4 units of Humalog. So, the total is probably 35 Units a day.

50 units of lantus each night
15 units of humalog per meal
1 unit of correction for every 30 over 120

Here are the poll results, after 322 votes: looks like a Bell curve to me, with the average somewhere around 30 units per day:

Do you lo-carb? Type 1 or 2? Just curious : )

My Bolus 11.9
My Basal 7.7
My total 19.6

But I’m using U-500 Regular , so multiply those numbers by 5.

I’m still not getting good control yet. I’ve been pumping for 6 weeks.

BBach,

Have you tried this technique: How To Lower Your Blood Sugar?

It was promoted for years on the old alt.support.diabetes newsgroup and hundreds of people have found it effective. It is well worth trying and you can do it safely with insulin.

I use 30.0 units standard novolog basal per day and from 6.0 to 12.0 units of total novolog boluses depending on my activity level and how much I eat that day :).

Average = 38.0 units novolog

I have 20 units in the morning and 10 units before dinner.

Dear Brigitte.

Thanks for including your weight. If I calculated correctly this is a total insulin use of 0.44 IU/ Kg-Day. I weight 114 kg and use about 65 IU making it 0.57 IU/Kg-Day. So I may be slightly more insulin resistant than you. I dont know what type I am for sure. It would be interesting to know what the approximate weight of the other bloggers is to have a feel of how much insulin is needed.

Dear Mike. How much do you weight so that we can compare insulin consumption on a #IU/Kg-Day. How do you split between basal and bolus. Overinsulating may be a cause of our hunger.

Dear aaron. Thanks for including weight. This works out to 0.40 IU/kg-Day. This is less than my 0.57 IU/Kg-Day. This is not surprising because I weight 250 at 6’!" so you would expect some insulin resistance in my case. I have been tinkering with the Basal to Bolus amounts to try and minimize the bolus to see if that helps the hunger. Total insulin within limits is what counts for BG control.
