Dear donna. Thanks for including your weight. Your consumption is 0.36 IU/Kg-Day compared to mine at 0.57IU/Kg-Day. This is not surprising since I am grossely obese at 250 lb and only 6’ 1". To improve my BMI I would have to be taller like Garfield joked. So I guess insulin resistance does exist.
Dear BBach. How much do you weight, I am trying to get a feel for how much insulin on a normalized # IU/Kg-Day a person needs because usually your drug needs are proportional to body mass. I was wondering if over insulining causes uncontrollable hunger. I noticed that the slim diabetics need about 0.40 IU/Kg-day whereas I use 0.57IU/Kg-day this is probably because I am far from slim at 250 lb and only 6 foot 1 inch. The though is that we should try and reduce our insulin consumption if we can to the lower figure.
Anthony, you know us tudiabetesphiles are not shy about discussing nearly every aspect of diabetes, but asking me to put my weight online is asking a lot
Dear Manny.
Great poll. Not surprised that it is a normal curve. I was trying to normalize a few of the results on a total IU per Kg per day. I was just wondering if overinsulinating cause extreme hunger that causes weight gain that causes more insulin and onwards in a death spiral. The slim diabetics so far seem to need about 0.40 IU/Kg-day and my needs are 0.57IU/Kg-day so I guess you can attribute the excess to insulin resistance. Of course this is a simplification because the dosage depends on the quality of BG control and maybe diet and of course if you are currently loosing or gaining weight but I think these are secondary issues. Some insulin using diabetics may still be producing their own insulin and some may be severely insulin resistant.
Ok here are my stats
50 y/o white male
254 lbs
Type 2
Old regimen
100 units of humalog 75/25 3 x per day
40 units of humalog N at bed time
Total 340 units a day. no cover, no blousing.
I was non compliant due to no insurance. At $85.00 a bottle, I could not afford to purchase 10 bottles a month on my own.
After a bout of Diabetic Keto Acidocis (DKA) I had a change in my priorities and a change in my treatment.
New Regimen
Basal dose,
60 units of Lantis
Coverage
10 units of Apidra before each meal, plus the following scale based on before meal BG levels. 100-150, add 5 units, 150-200, add 10 units, 200-250, add 15 units, 250-300, add 20 units.
So at a minimum 90 units a day.
I have yet to be able to work out how much to take in anticipation of a carb heavy meal. But that is what registered dieticians are for I assume.
I am a pumper so I only use Humalog but I go through about 300 units a day. For meals I use 1 unit for every 2 carbs.I have been looking at switching to U500 because of my insulin resistance. Is there any one else on here using U500?
I currently use 15 units of Lantus and 10-30 units of Novolog depending on what I eat.
I went on a 2-week backpacking trip earlier this summer, and was down to 4 units of Lantus for the duration of the trip! Crazy!
Wow, this one is an eye-opener! But I would also like to know the percentage of basal/bolus people use. If low carbing, that would influence the TDD. My niece is 12, 90 pounds, thin and probably using more insulin now than she ever will in life. Eats approx. 180 to 220 grams carbs per day. TDD can be anywhere from mid 40s to high 50s. Glad to read this as she will not always need such a large amount. Large insulin dose for basals, that then drop back to normal, are scarey.
I take about 46 units a day on the average, 20 of them are basal.
I’m a Type 2 but I take 12 units of Levimier daily.
I wear a pump and I use about 15 units a day of humalog
haha agreed! I don’t understand how someone can use so little! I’m on around 60 a day!
