my son has just bought some sugar free mints but when i checked the carbs they were 97g/100g but not with sugar but something called Polyols. Does anyone know what these are and do they affect your BG like sugar does?.
Polyols is a sugar alcohol. Many items purport to be “sugar free” because they include sugar alcohol vs. actual sugar. This is why one needs to be leery of “sugar-free” products. Sugar alcohol has carbs and can still elevate blood glucose.
Some people can metabolize sugar alcohols & they will have the same effect as sugar on BG. Others don’t & sugar alcohols can effect them with gastric upset. Erythritol is the only sugar alcohol that doesn’t have either effect, but it’s expensive & not used widely.
