Because of my type 1 diabetes and a long history of struggling with anorexia I have been afraid that I damaged my system too much to ever have a baby. Over the last year or so I have really stepped up my self care. I have a pump and a CGM now and I am in a normal weight range. During the last four months I have had my period like clockwork. I have been able to put the dates into an ovulation calculator and act accordingly... for March I should have started on the 10th based on webMDs ovulation calculator.
So here we are seven days late. I know I had a lot of unusual fatigue the past two weeks or so, last week I noticed I seemed to be gaining some weight or having "swelling in my lower abs *I notice weight stuff quickly. Starting on the 14th, I could tell my breasts were swollen beyond what I have ever noticed with my period/pms. They remained noticeably swollen and slightly more sensitive all weekend, although that seems to have diminished a little today. And finally, I have been so moody! WAY beyond my typical PMS or personality :(
So here is the issue, I was so excited but didn't want to get my hopes up so I did an at home pregnancy test this morning but it was NEGATIVE! This had made me additionally moody... lol... but in all seriousness... My body has not felt off like this before, I'm late, and honestly I just feel like I might be but I keep telling myself that I can't be. Is seven days late too early to test? Does type 1 mess with pregnancy tests ever? Has anyone else experienced this strangeness. If it's not early signs of pregnancy I don't know what the heck is going on with me!!!
It's not too early to test at all, but bear in mind that tests often give false negatives. I say, go back to the drug store and pick up a box with two or three tests in it, and choose a variety labeled "early detection." These are more sensitive to the pregnancy hormone that signals a positive, so they're likely to be a little more accurate. Wait until morning to test. In theory, the morning's first urine has higher concentrations of the hormone if it's present at all. If it's still negative, tuck the remaining unused test(s) away in a drawer so you can either try again in a few days if you still don't have your period, or you have them available if you ever have another late period! (BTW, if the test is positive, don't throw out the extra tests. They're handy to have on hand during early pregnancy. If you notice pregnancy symptoms vanishing, you can use the test to see if your pregnancy hormone has gone away. If it has, call your OB. It could mean you're losing the fetus.)
OK, that said, there are other reasons why you might have a late period. Some are reasonably harmless, like stress. (That does it to me!) But if you miss this period entirely and then you find your next one doesn't come when it normally would have, time to call the doc.
Good luck!
So I am pregnant, four tests over the last couple days makes that pretty clear. Although I am happy my body can get pregnant... this was unplanned and now I am pretty scared... thanks for the advice. Looks like I have some readjusting of my life plan to do!
Congrats!!!
I know it's scary. It can be scary even when planned. People say it's such a happy time, but it's a complex time.
Congratulations! Even under the best circumstances, pregnancy is scary. But you can do this! And it is soooo worth it :)
Thanks :) I am doing my best to take care of myself and this baby now ! I have no idea what I will do from there but I know that is most important right now!
