Posting #4 of my 50-year-adventure

PART-4 of my 50-year adventure with diabetes type-1.

Well, here is posting-4 already. I blush thinking of all the nice people giving me nice responses on what I write about. Many will read my stuff but never let it be known that they did read it. It is really nice to see what people have to say about my writings. Good or bad. Truthfully not many bad reports.

Sometimes I see postings whereby people are very upset that they are not able to get full control of their blood sugars. Would it help you if I told you that not one diabetic I ever met can say that they have full control? You have to always try to get your sugars under control but please, don’t get upset when you cannot get there. I also used to get upset when the sugars go way overboard in spite of doing everything right. Many a time I was ready to throw my monitor right through the window. (But only when it was open!) Then I learned that if you get upset about it is even harder to get control. I have period that I do good and then things simply don’t! My HGA 1C was in the last 5 times at 5.9. Then suddenly the very last time it was 6.4. A shocker to me but…still less then the much preached 7.0

And here we are back to the old times. With Dr Leibel I was moved on to two needles per day from the beginning only once a day. My needles consisted of a glass syringe to be used many times but after every use we had to boil it in hot water…no, not in cold water you won’t get it to boil, believe me!
I did try until Johanna fired me! Then we would attached a needle to the front of the syringe, this needle had to be replaced daily. Jeah, those needles, long and thick, they did hurt, sure did! I had to push up on my leg and stick the needle in but in an angle. Because of the lenght I had to weave them in with often a bad pain. The result was that over time I lost the use of my legs completely for the purpose of injecting and forever moved to my belly. Since I now take 5 needles daily we try to use my back also and that is Johanna’s job. Two needles in the Am one in front and one in the back. (Humelin and Lantus) Then one for lunch, one for dinner and one at bedtime sometimes two, depending on my reading. We also had no medical plan to cover our expenses. This story is getting too long again.
Hope to have something for you in story-5. I’m sure I will have.

Todelu, your friend JB or simply John.

Robert, thank you so much for your reply. I like to hear how others are doing and have memories to tell about.
I used to use the plastic syringes several times, but under our medical care I can get as many syringes as I need ever since getting past age 65. I have a $300. deductable for the entire year to be paid in easy payments. After that everything I need is paid for including all doctors, specialists, all hospital stay, operations and mostly all meds with some excluded. I couldn’t afford to live in the US. Hope you are doing well!

JB.
