We're going to the beach for a glorious week of sun, surf, sand, and hopefully I can finally make some headway in my book.
But I have a question. What do I do with my daughter's pump at the beach?
When we're at the pool she either wears her pump if she's out of the water, or I put it in my cooler while she's swimming.
But at the beach I envision rolling around in the sand, digging holes, making sand castles, running to and from the water, sometimes going in, sometimes not.
I've heard that using the little clip to close off the site when the pump is removed is good for keeping sand and grit out. But I'm kind of nervous about getting sand in the pump itself.
Would you suggest just keeping the pump in the cooler and checking her number and bolusing accordingly, say, once an hour?
Should I somehow wrap it in a zip-lock bag or plastic wrap, with the tubing sticking out for when she's wearing it?
I think what you described will be great. Keep the pump in a bag with the tubing hanging out to keep out the dirt and sand, and unless she’s just sitting in one place, leave it off and attach it every hour to bolus. (if she’s doing more running than normal she might not need much insulin.) You could also just revert back to MDI for the day and leave the pump at home (if you have any long acting insulin on hand). Just call your endo for an appropriate dosage if you haven’t done long-acting in a while.
Does she use the ping? That is what my son uses (he’s 2) I called Animas before our trip to the beach last week. I was told that the pump would be just fine on the beach and in the water-pool or ocean. They were right. No problems at all!
The little clips are great for the port. Get some gauze 2x2s to keep the “needle” clean. Put the whole pump in a zip lock bag to keep the sand out. Cooler is great. Double check with your endo about frequency of corrections. It may be worth going back to MDI while at the beach.
