Pumps

Hey everyone. I go back to the doctor in October and im thinking about trying a diffrent pump. My animas pump is out of warenty so i can get a diffrent one. My dad and i were thinking about the Metronic. If i try that then ill have tryed all the pumps. And since you have to have the pump for 4 years i would be 17 and old enough to figure out which pump i like the most. What do you all think.

I think you are old enough to figure out which pump you like the most now? Like a 4 year old would be “I like the pink one” or “I like the green one” but you seem to know how to use the thing and stuff so I would think you’d be able to have some input. I like my MM pump a lot but I haven’t tried any other flavors. Mine is the older model and there are some new features on the newer/ Revel ones that I wish I had although I can’t rattle them off off the top of my head?

I’m a mom of teens and I agree with Acidrock. Maybe you can have a trainer or CDE show you the different pumps and then brainstorm with your dad about what features you like and don’t like for each. Your insurance plan may not cover all equally, and that is where a parent will have to step in.

Hi Anna,

Why don’t you create a short list, most companies provide a detailed overview of their particular pumps on their websites.

YouTube is also full of in-depth reviews of insulin pumps.

You decision could be swayed by a multiude of factors, would you prefer tubeless delivery, would you like you pump to be completely waterproof? Are you on small doses and would you benefit from a pump that can be set up to give fractions of a unit? Is size an issue? Would you like a colour display?

I am asking these questions myself at the moment, as suggested by kim drawing up a short list will help. Try and get your hands on a couple of them so you can have a play.

This site highlights differences between pumps in the US and maybe useful for your father and yourself, not very nice to look at, but it has all the relevant information.

Good luck.

If you’re old enough to post here with this question, you’re old enough to decide now which one you want. Besides, you’re the one who has to wear it and use it every day. Should definitely be your decision. Oh, and given that you’re a teenager, your level of technological sophistication when using a devices like an insulin pump is probably more advanced than an endocrinologist’s

I see you’re using an Animas now and, from my research, there aren’t too many differences between the Animas Ping and the Revel. The Animas has a nicer screen, the Revel has the integrated CGM. They look and feel a bit different, both have some degree of water resistance (Animas is supposedly waterproof, but I don’t think I would take an $8500 device in the water…ever).

I have the Minimed Revel and really like it. It’s easy to use, has all the features I need, and even though I don’t use it at the moment, I like the integrated CGM (I will sometimes use it to explore trends, but I like to save my skin for my pump sites). The Revel is also relatively easy to conceal (i.e., hide under clothing), something that may or may not be important to you.

On a whole, I’ve been very happy with Medtronic’s support team. I also LOVE Carelink. It has helped me significantly in understanding my patterns. To be honest, I’ve never been so good about logging things as I have since I started using Carelink!! For me, one HUGE benefit of pumping is that I don’t have to use log books at all - everything is recorded via my pump and my UltraLink meter, and for me this is invaluable.

What things are you most concerned about with regard to your pump? From what I’ve read in the various forums, the Minimed pumps seem slightly more durable, but that’s just my impression based on what people have written. I think with any pump, you have to treat it as carefully as you would treat any $8500 device.

I’'m possibly in the same place.
If I can get a new pump funded, am considering MM.
Then I would have two (hopefully working) Animas pumps put away and one entirely new brand to work with.
My impression though, has been that MM pumps break down more than Animas.
If I am wrong, that’s cool.
It seems like getting into a new company for the next four years might be at least interesting.
