QUESTION about students who study abroad in US

Hey everyone! I’m a young diabete from Asia and I recently have the plan to apply master degree in US. So I really care about the health insurance thing… I’m a pumper now(MM) and I’d like to try to use a CGMS, but here in Asia there have no market about that…So I wonder if I can purchase one (actually i’d like to try the dexcom) in US…But here is the question, I know that the CGMS will cost lots of money without a cover, but as an international student is it possible to have an insurance which can cover for buying a CGMS in US? THX for help

A lot of students as universities get their health care from the university they attend. I went to two large, state universitie, University of Illinois and University of North Carolina and just got all my stuff from the university but that was in the 1980s/early 90s so I didn't have a pump/ CGM. If you are choosing a plan, it may be useful to aim your studies towards a university with an affiliated medical school which might lead them to more access to that sort of technology. It may also help to contact the university(-ties?) and ask them how that works. I'm not sure if it health care would be different for studying abroad?

Humm, sounds good about choose a university affiliated medical school!THX!

I was going to say the same thing, to check with the university you plan to attend about health insurance and coverage. But what about ongoing supplies? I don't know how long you will be here (4 years?) but obviously that would be something to investigate as well for when you went home.

I studied at two different large universities here in the U.S., one private and one public. It really all depends on which university you pick and what health plan they offer. At one of the universities, the health insurance was awful, and at the other one it was pretty good. It has been my experience that most of the time there is a limit to how much they will pay. While they might pay for your pump supplies, chances are you'll have to at LEAST pay a percentage of the price for them, as well as any insulin or other medications you might need. I kind of doubt they will pay for a CGM, but it would be worth calling a few of the universities you're interested in to get more details about their student health insurance plans.

I would not plan to depend on the US healthcare system. Our system usually fails in comparison to most other modern countries and even in comparison with less wealthy nations.
Anyway. . .you might want to check with the student disability office at the university or college you will be attending. Almost all the major universities have such offices and some of the smaller colleges. If there is not a specific office of disability services, you might try the general student services department. Just look through the college web site under the word “disability” and you might find something. Someone at the disability office should be able to answer your question. I hope you find a way because we like to have international students at our postsecondary institutions.
