Hi, I have a 14 yo who has diabetes. I recently thought about the things that I have in my purse. I carry a glycogen kit, apple juice, glucose tablets. Thinking about this, I was saying to myself, if I were in a car accident and could not speak for myself (unconscious or something) Would they think I was the diabetic? If I were by myself or even with my daughter in the car (We are getting a bracelet for her). My question is this: Do you carry something in your purse explaining that you are not the diabetic that your child is? Or do you cary a different bag for these things and just have them in the car / stroller or just with you if you are all out?
I would just hate for something to happen and have them think that I was the diabetic and have bad effects because of it.
Thanks.
We do use a small backpack to carry his diabetes supply bag. Inside the diabetes bag we have a card in a window packet with my son’s contact information in the event of an emergency. The backpack allows us to also carry snacks and juices. He takes the backpack with him everywhere he goes. He also wears a dog tag identifying him as a Type 1 diabetic and it includes his name and my mobile #…we tried the bracelet, but he is very active in sports and ended up losing every one of them…anyhow he finds the tag more attractive…
You might put your daughter’s name on her test kit, the refillable glucose tab container, the Glucagon box, and her insulin pen holder (as in our case), etc. I carry this stuff in a backpack with my own personal stuff. My daughter wears a bracelet with “Type 1 Diabetes” and her name appears on the test kit she carries with her.
Cheers,
Karen
Thanks! She does carry most of her stuff, But I carry the major stuff and extra. I am going to print out on of those cards for her. I think JDRF has one. We are working on finding a bracelet that she likes. She keeps being wishy washy about what she wants (go figure huh? )
Thanks again.
On the bracelet / dog tag, Yen you put your cell #? I was very hesitant to put my number on there, I was thinking that if I ever changed it or they couldn’t get a hold of me. I think if we have a Card that info can be on there. On her bracelet I am going to just put her name on the front and Type 1 Diabetes and Insulin Dependent on the back.
I have a backpack given to me by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation that contains everything connected with Eric’s diabetes–his blood sugar records, his carb calculator, glucagon kit, juice, crackers, meters/strips/finger-poker, insulin needles… it even has an insulated pocket for his insulin vial to keep it cold. Whenever I take Eric anywhere, the bag goes with us, and it’s never, EVER separated from him. If he’s in the car, it’s in the car next to his seat. If he’s in a grocery cart, it’s in the cart with him. I do not carry any of his supplies in my purse for the simple reason that I don’t want the mistake you mention being made either—I’m not exactly a skinny-Minny so anyone who found me with diabetic supplies could be forgiven for thinking they were mine. I do put a bracelet on him in case we get separated at the mall, the bracelet has “Diabetes” on the front and his name and phone numbers (cell and home) on the back, but other than that my strategy is to keep his emergency bag with him wherever he goes.
I have been having DD carry a purse w/her supplies in it, However I still have her glucagon and other stuff - crackers (and thank god while shopping Friday night she had a low. So I had crackers to give her. they were kinda crunched up from being in my purse for a while. But they worked. I since decided that I am going to get a ziploc baggie and put all of the diabetes stuff in it (still in my purse) but put a card w/her info in it and probably write her name on it. Hopefully this will keep everything from getting crunched up. We are working on finding a bracelet that she likes. She is a picky teenager so this might take some time. However until then I am ordering a plain jane one (I like the idea of having my cell number on the back of the bracelet). I was in contact w/someone from JDRF, they were supposed to send me a bag, but I never received it. Does it take a while for that get to you? Its been about 2 months almost 3 wow how time flies.
No, I got it pretty quickly–within maybe 2 weeks. Maybe it got lost in the mail? I’d call and let them know because it’s a great bag. They even sent a cute little diabetic bear, although I don’t know if that’s just because he’s so little.
I’ve seen some pretty nice bracelets in the catalogs we looked at, if I can find one of them I’ll post the web site.
Hi,
I carry a soft pack lunch box with all her things every where we go. All items labeled with her name & Its bright pink…
but the problem might be if there was a car accident they would just think thats a kids lunch!
I might label the out side and put a card in my purse.
Thanks for making me think more about it!
Kirsten
We keep a Dickies small messenger bag. We call it the star bag (design on it) and it has everything she needs in it. We have a separate bag with all the same supplies that we keep at school. But this one stays with me while she is at school (in case I pick her up while I am out and have nto gone home - it happened once) and then she carries it when she is home/not at school. I do think I need to put some type of chain medical tag on it so it is not mistaken as a kids purse or something. (like in case of an accident)
Inside - log book, insulin, syringes, lancets, meter, poker, granola bars, fruit snacks, slim jims, glucose tabs.
Am I missing anything??
Thanks for this post.
