Relion glucose meter

so trying to eat via the meter so it takes a lot of sticks to do this sometimes 8 strips a day, so i decided to go out and buy this walmart brand, after having a no carb dinner, 2 hr later its telling me i have a 209 reading. so i grabbed my freestyle meter it read 103 which is most likely what it is, relion meter i can’t rely on.

A good meter with cheap strips is the Contour Next USB. The strips run around 20-23 dollars for 2 boxes of 50 on Amazon…The strips work on all the Contour Next meters if you don’t like that one.

good to know, going to ask the dr to up the script for my strips

In another thread,“Which meter is currently the most reliable” I discuss meter testing and specifically mention two Walmart brands. When you are trying to compare two meters, I believe it is extremely important that both tests be from the SAME large drop of blood, not two successive finger sticks. I believe my test results indicate that the two Walmart brands and the One Touch are in close agreement. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee that ANY of them are correct. That would require multiple comparisons with a lab standard.

The ReliOn is a good meter for a cheap meter. It is not bad.

Every meter will give you an occasional reading that is off. Just give it a chance. I depend on mine frequently, they have been pretty good over the years.

Last night I purchased 900 strips(Contour Next) for 181.00 on amazon(60.00 for 300). Since medicare will most likely not approve my usual 12-14 a day of my One Touch strips(or any brand at that amount), I began stocking up on them via Amazon. At 20.00(approx) for 100 of the Contour Next, that’cheaper than buying the One Touch strips on Amazon.

I still like my Verio IQ best as the screen and port light are very bright, unlike like the C Next, but since their cheaper, I’m gonna work with it.

I’m not sure how to file them for taxes however as i don’t have a medical receipt for them since they come from Amazon.

Acu-Chek will soon have a new meter “the guide”. Retail strips will be $19.99 for the first 50 then $10.00 for each 50 after that. No copay card needed. The meter has been incredibly accurate in my test so far. It will be available at all major pharmacy’s later this summer and it has a unique canister that will not spill strips when it tips over. it is a worthy new competitor not exactly on cost by certainly on functionality.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been using the Relion Prime meter for a couple of years now and it seems just as accurate as the OneTouch I was using before it. For me, there was really no difference out of pocket costs, and I didn’t want to hassle with prescription or having to ration. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with it!

This is true about if any of them are as accurate. I don’t mind a few points difference but a 70 point difference is quite a bit. I always test from the same prick when comparing. But who knows. A lot of people seem to like it.

Bayer’s Contour Next One meter (uses the strips you purchased) is the newest meter in the Contour Next lineup. It has a nice light that is almost if not as bright as the Verio IQ light. The problem is this light is not documented anywhere that I’ve seen. It’s like an Easter Egg that you simply need to discover. To activate it just press the button twice when the meter is off then insert the test strip.

Bayer contour 1 will accept the relion prime strips?

mremmers, Thank you for sharing this. Question: Are you talking about a port light or the light on the screen itself being as bright as the IQ and brighter than the Next Link I’m using? The one I’m using has both but in my opinion, both suck. LOL So dim. In the IQ they are incredibly bright. I also hate that I have to push twice to light up port(which is so dim, it’s barely helpful in a dark room, course I have vision issues) wherein with the IQ, you just stick the strip in and it’s done, lights up, brightly. And, the IQ shuts off automatically when removing the strip.

I’ve used several meters with port lights that are far superior and user friendly to the Next, but that’s me, others may feel totally different.

I’m also fumbling to remove the strip container, lancet device as well as fumbling with getting to the machine itself, menu button, etc(those stretchy holders are a struggle for me).

I think the IQ and using the Free Style lite has made me a lazy meter user. LOL.

I will call the company tomorrow to find out about the port light, with the Next One, but even if it’s about the same as the Link, I can’t afford the strips with the IQ(out of pocket) and depending on how many medicare is going to approve(amt per month), I’ll need to stick with the Contour because of cost.
Again, thank you for the info as I plan to ck it out.

No, @Mikael, I was respoding to Susan who just purchased Contour Next Strips. Sorry.

The Contour Next One light is a port light. If you have vision issues it may not be enough. I think the Verio IQ could get away with that super intense port light because the battery was rechargable. The One uses replaceable coin batteries. Anyhow, as of last January, if you called Bayer and asked for a One, they’d send one out free of charge. Just for funsies I took this photo, in my dark, windowless bathroom, of the One’s port light and with some difficulty I can read text. And I agree with you in that it sucks changing meters. We go through the testing process so very often that any change in the bottle, grip, strip insertion, etc., all seems simply wrong when using something new. Good luck with your transition.

Thank again! That looks like the same amt of light mine has. I ck during the night when I get up to pee, also like ckg in movie theaters, etc so love the IQ. The Free Style lite was also amazing and it had a coin battery( at the time) .I just read a few posts on the Medtronics site (FB) and many are also complaining about case and light. One person said if you call the company they’ll send you a better case(minus elastic things). That light tho …

I’ve used both the Next USB and Next One and the One is definitely brighter than the USB. It’s also white instead of amber, which helps. I also have a visual impairment (legally blind) but I find because of this I actually don’t need the port light. I can do everything in the dark by touch. I do need a backlit screen on all my meters to read the results, though.

Here’s a picture of the Next USB and Next One lights. I haven’t used the Vario IQ, but I think the main difference between these lights and the one on the Freestyle Lite (which I have used) are that these ones have the LED covered by a frosted plastic panel, while the Lite had the LED exposed, so it was much brighter.

Thank you. The light does look a tad bit brighter so will call dr and get new RX that hopefully medicare will cover, tho they are not that pricey. I just spent half an hr with Contour help and got a different case. The meter will pop in and out but the strips/lancet are still in those elastic things but at least meter will be easier.

Glad you’re getting a new case; it’s much nicer than the old one.

hey Rick, how did you get this meter, and how long have you been using it?
