Sick Days

Well we have officially had our first round of sick days with Keytones. :frowning: Maddy has influenza type B. I was a little upset at this because we actually got the stupid flu shot! and here she ends up with the flu anyway. So now for the first time ever she has keytones, and not just a little, but purple, 160! so I call the Dr. and followed her instructions - 2 carbs, cover for the carbs and plenty of water, and peeing. check every 4 hrs. BG has been all over the place, from just above normal all the way up to high 300’s. DD is very very frustrated. She hates drinking the water and her tummy hurts. and hates being made to eat something when she doesn’t feel good. I just wanted to touch bases with everyone here. Please be careful! if someone is coughing near you or looks like they don’t feel good. Just stay away from them, don’t hug them, or share drinks, or anything else. DD did. Now she is telling me she would rather go to the hospital. she is trying to take an easy way out the keytones have gone back to normal, it just seems that over night they come back - because she’s not drinking fluid while she is sleeping (DUH, when will she learn to do that? im so joking here). Anyway I hope that we are handling this the right way and don’t end up in the hospital. I am out of sick leave and got docked for leaving yesterday. I would have to get docked big time if she goes to the Hos. At what point should I consider the hospital? The Pedi said if in a few days we are not in a comfy place just to come back. She gave her tamaflu for the flu and antibiotics for a secondary infection should it occur -she is thinking it will. So here we go.
Any advice? Besides - soup - sleep- check BG and Keytones every 4 hrs?

Thanks.

YIKES! Hang in there, the flu messes with everyone. It sounds like you have all the bases covered tho. I used to have a roomie who swore by a shot of Nyquil and a shot of Jack when he was sick… sound like mom could use that when DD gets to feeling better!

Oh, hospital for me happens when I start to vomit and can’t stop. This can happen because of the virus itself or if the blood sugars get too high. In D patients, the worst thing to do is stop taking your insulin because you haven’t been eating. Since you are watching her sugars closely, this shouldn’t be an issue!

yeah, I am trying to get her to check every 4 hrs. However she doesn’t want to eat anything. No throwing up yet, but she has complained of her tummy hurting. (hehe I so could use the shot, if I wasn’t still breastfeeding, trust me I would be 1st inline for that!) I am practically having to twist her arm to get her to even drink juice. Ok. TYVM Scott!

Hugs and prayers going up!

Hmmm. Instead of eating 2 carbs, how about she fluid carbs? It’s easier to sip your way well. Gingerale? Gatorade? Watered down Gatorade?

W/out diabetes, they’d tell you, when she’s gone 12 hours w/out vomiting, do the brat diet. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. (Do some banana, if no vomiting in 4 hours, you can have plain (white) rice w/out fats.) Make sense?

Applejuice, watered down, ice chips, no acidic juices. You know the drill.

How’s Maddy doing today?

maddy is doing much better today, no fever this morning ! YEAH! We did grape juice, bland toast, and soup. We had clam chowder for dinner, she never threw up. THank god. But Keytones were extremely high and her BG is all over the place. I am hoping today that it calms down. THe Pedi wanted to wait 1 extra day to make sure her BG came down before sending her to school. So I am hoping tomorrow she is able to go back to school. I am crossing my fingers hoping that she doesn’t a secondary infection now. Thats what we are on the look out for. Thank god this is over, for a while I was just hoping that we didn’t have to go to the hospital.
Now my 3 yr old is sick and is throwing up with a fever of 101.6. Here we go again.
