So frustrated with these high numbers after being sick

Hello Everyone,

So I'm just getting over a cold...I am definitely feeling better now (after 5 days) but my BG is still really high. this is my first time being sick since getting type 1. (sept. 09). I have had great control until this past week. I am hitting 300 frequently, even after increasing my rates and changing out my sets multiple times. Will my numbers (do you think) go back to what they were, or do you think an illness stresses out whatever honeymoon I was in. How many days after getting over being sick do your numbers run high. i am scared to keep increasing because what if my rates all the sudden go back to how they were!

It takes lots of test strips, lots of writing down the time and amount of insulin you figure is on board, and lots of tamping down those numbers before they start getting used to staying in range. Keep on working with it, test an hour after eating to know what’s happening, and remember that short acting insulin amounts stay in the body 2.5 hours- 3 hours. As you see the BG coming down, decrease your insulin. Don’t run low. Up and down is no fun; best to slowly work it down. Keep on it. It takes persistence above all.
I usually figure one week or so to return to normal after a 5 day siege.

Thanks! So do your rates/dosages go back to how they were before sickness fast? Or does it slowly go back to how it was?

When I am sick I usually have to increase x2 my normal daily dosis. Sometimes is very scary. The High numbers runs for about 1 week aprox but suddendly the numbers go down very quick, so you have to watch you BG and decrease you insulin dosage to normal levels.

For me it went down to normalish, then spiked again, and now it’s back to where it should be… took me about a week and a half after i got over my cold to get my BG back in normal range with my normal amount of insulin.

It was pretty gradual… you’ll run slightly low at first if you’re like me, then you just adjust until you’re back in range
