Starting Job Today

I am starting my first job today ,kinda nervous . I have not told them that I have diabetes yet ,they have not asked about my med alert bracelet but I am sure they will today because you cant wear anything unless it is aa med alert .

I was just wondering how to go about checking my sugar with out causing a scene ,do I just say I am going to the bathroom ? It is a chic Fil A . Also If I have a low at work what is the best way to handle things ?

I am very nervous because it is my first job plus I have to worry about the big D .
Thanks for any help ,wish me luck !!

First, keep in mind that you are NOT required to disclose your medical condition to anyone if you don’t want to. If you need breaks to check your BG, you can keep it as simple as explaining to the manager that, due to medical reasons, you may have to take a break here and there. I believe that, legally, they cannot ask you specifics. If someone asks you about your bracelet, you can just say you wear it for a medical condition and leave it at that.

That all said, you have nothing to be ashamed of and if you are comfortable letting people know (probably a good thing, since someone should know what to do in an emergency), you should explain to them that you have type 1 diabetes and field any questions they have. Keep in mind that the law is on your side and you CANNOT be fired for having type 1 diabetes and needing to take breaks to check your blood sugar. Your manager is required to support that.

Thanks I think I will try to work a week or 2 before I tell anyone . Unless of course something happens & I have too . I usually have good control of my BS unless I eat some good food like Mexican ,chinese or Pizza . Thanks again

Tyler, as a manager I’d like to know so I can see that you’ve got a break before being wildly busy over lunchtime.
Have glucose tabs in your pocket & take one if you’re having more exercise than you normally do.
You know how many to take to up you 40 mg/dl so you can ride around 100-110?
You’re stressed so you’re likely to run high - until you have exercise. DO check your BG during every break.
Wash your hands before testing - for sure - with chicken around.

Gives you both - Congratulations and Good Luck !

thanks leo2 I am just afraid taht if I tell them they may find a reason to let me go ? I hope I not but you never know . The manager/operator is very nice & she may have already seen my med alert thing & and just did not ask . Or you a manager of Chic Fil A ? Thanks again

Thanks Jeffrey !
