I was able to get XP to run on Windows 8, and even install and run Dexcom Studio... but sadly it doesn't recognize my receiver when I connect it.
I assume this is the similar USB issue mentioned in your thread, Hank :-(
I emailed Dexcom asking when it would be compatible with Windows 8 and this was their reply:
"Dexcom does not have a timeline for when Windows 8 compatibility will be available. Any product that Dexcom makes, whether it's software or hardware, must go through FDA approval which can take an extended period of time. If they require changes to the software (or hardware) we must adjust and resubmit for approval. I apologize that we cannot provide you with an exact release date but please keep checking our website for updates."
Yes unfortunately that is the issue. The same problem exits with Vista.
Dexcom is working on a Cloud software product so I'm not sure how much time they are spending on the Windows 8 problem. But, I think, they would still have to fix the device driver issue with Windows 8.
It works under XP but you need to load and sometimes reload the drivers for the receiver. It took my several times of attaching the device and eventually it worked. XP must be at SP3 level.
I have been able to make the Dexcom Studio work on Windows 8 with a workaround. But please be aware that this workaround is not supported by Dexcom. I told them about the workaround - but they responded: "Unfortunately, Dexcom does not have an FDA approved solution of enabling Windows 8 compatibility with our Dexcom Studio software at this time. "
So if you proceed, you do it on your own risk.
The Dexcom software relies on an undocumented and unsupported registry key to identify whether the receiver is connected via USB or not. In Windows 8 this registry key is not used anymore - so the Dexcom software always believes the receiver is not connected.
So to make the Dexcom software work on Win8 you simply have to add this registry key manually so that Dexcom Studio always believes the receiver is connected. This has some small disadvantages - for example you have to restart Dexcom Studio if you started the program before actually connecting the receiver, because it doesn't receive the event when you connect the receiver on Win8 anymore. But overall I am pretty happy that it works at all on Win8.
Here are the necessary steps to add the registry key: 1) Download the attached file "Dexcom_Studio_Workaround.reg" and save it somewhere on the local disk.
2) Double click the file - this should bring up a dialogue asking you for Administrator permisions. Changing the registry needs admin privileges.
3) Connect your receiver
4) Start the Dexcom Studio.
Steps 1) and 2) are only necessary once - not each time you want to use Dexcom Studio.
Feel free to ping me if you run into any issues with this workaround.
Fabian - this didn't work for me. Dexcom Studio says "Receiver not attached". I've triple-verified that I've followed your steps, and I do know my way around the Windows registry, too.
I see "Receiver not attached" only after uninstalling the device driver.
You can install the device driver form DexCom Studio (Tools/Drivers for Dexcom Receiver/Install drivers for all other Dexcom receivers) [I assume you have the G$, correct?]
I had installed Studio a few weeks ago, found it didn't work with Windows 8, and uninstalled it.
Saw your message this morning, and reinstalled Studio. Tried your instructions - no go. I ended up, just now, uninstalling the driver, then reinstalling it again. Reimported the registry change. Still no go.
I will try to see what happens on another Win8 machine first. I tried so many things to get this to work - so maybe I missed some step I did much earlier in my instructions.
Several people have reported issues with the original workaround I provided. My bad - in the registry-file I assumed that one piece of information would be constant - but it changes on each machine.
I have created a small tool that takes this into account as should be able to install the workaround - I have tested it myself on three different machines this time.
Installation steps: 1) Unzip the InstallDexcomWorkaround.zip to some local folder
2) Run InstallDexcomWorkaround.exe with elevated privileges (right click and choose "Run as Administrator")
3) The tool will list the recognized receivers, try to apply the workaround to the registry and list the receivers after the registry change. Feel free to send me the output of the tool if you see any errors.
