Supplements, Medications

Hi,

I am currently looking into supplements and medications that may be of positive impact to a Type 1 diabetic such as myself.

After a brief googling, I understand that many diabetics are thought to be deficient in Thiamine, Vitamin B and Vitamin D.. Although I am not sure if there has been any concrete proof of causality between the two, nor have I seen any meta studies or the methodologies behind this research.

That aside I think I might start taking supplements ha, just in case..

I am seeing my endo on Thursday so will request a review of my various vitamin levels.

I have also started taking a baby aspirin daily along with other multivitamins.

So.. What supplements and medications (insulin, metaformin etc aside ha) do you guys take and why? Are they are any you have had successes with above and beyond that of the placebo effect?

Thanks,

Buckley.

I take Fish oil and between 5000 and 10,000g of Vitamin D(3) daily.

I have idea how effetive the Fish Oil is, but I figure, what the heck.

I took the Vitamin D lab test recommended by the Vitamin D Council here:

Before I started taking Vitamin D supplements, I had practically no sign of any in my system. Afetr 60 days, I was in the normal range.

Thanks for the reply..

Have you felt any health benefits from the increase in D3 levels?

I take Fish Oil, 2,000u of Vitamin D3 (based on blood tests at direction of cardio), a baby aspirin (at direction of endo), a very small dose of bp med and statin (as preventive at direction of endo), and a probiotic. I was having IBS type pain that my gastro believes to be spasms and told me to try the probiotic - if it helped, great; if not, don't take it. It really seems to have made a difference for me (though it could be coincidence I guess) so I take it.

My daughter laughs at me and says I'm officially an old lady now because I use a pill organizer - one for a.m. pills and one for p.m. pills. It's just faster since I don't have to take the time to open each pill bottle.

Ha well I am 28 and I ha a pill organiser too ha ha...

I take a multivitamin...sometimes. To be honest, I just try to eat really healthy. Lots of fruits and veggies, low carb, moderate to high amounts of protein and good fats. I don't eat any poultry or red meat, but do eat a variety of seafood. Again, really heave on the veggies, and legumes as well.

I've seen so many studies showing that you don't really absorb all the vitamins that I'm dubious as to whether the cost is worth it.

Oh yeah, and I take insulin :-) But that's it. Trying to stay off everything else as much as I can for as logn as I can!

I am on Metformin for T2, but as well take fish oil, half strength aspirin, a small dose of bp medication and statins, Vit D on the advice of an endo because I was low in calcium, and a multivitamin. Have been wondering about taking Vit B as well but am fed up with all these 'old lady' pills already. Am going to ask my dr. about the Vit B next time I see him. I have no idea whether all the supplementary meds are making me feel any better or be more healthy.

I'm a T2 who stays in the low 5 A1C range on diet alone (low carb) but I also have to watch calories. I've had a broad range of complications, mostly involving 3 kinds of neuropathy, plus Charcot. I take supplements because I don't eat enough to get everything I need. So, here they are: Centrum Silver multivitamin, CoQ10, Benfotiamine, Calcium, potassium, magnesium, C, E, Omega 3, D3, B12, Folic Acid, L-Lysine, Garlic, Sulphoraphane, Wild Blueberry, Cinnamon, Chlorella, Turmeric, Acetyl Carnetine and, because I have gastroparesis, an Aloelax. Metformin is the only "drug" I take, 1000 mg a day. Does all this work? Well, I'm still here and I can walk again. Four years ago I was in a wheelchair and the neurologist was surprised I was still alive at my second appointment. I look 10 years younger than I did when I was "sick." I never have colds or the flu. Actually, I don't think I've ever had the flu all my life. I have my doubts, however, that my problems were CAUSED by diabetes, rather that it was also a result of an as-yet-undiagnosed autoimmune breakdown. I don't take anything more than the recommended dosage of anything, by the way, and I get all this from Swanson's online which keeps it affordable. Would I recommend all this to other people? I don't know. Most of you T1s seem to have fewer complications that I do.

To be honest, no, but I'm not noticing any side-effects either. One of those things that's no problem at all, so why not?

I asked my endo about a year ago if they recomended any supplements to my diet. My endo told me that if I was eating a healthy diet, than I should get all the vitamins and minerals I need. I am not sure how much I agree with this, but I doubt there is any conclusive data on this matter. As such, I take a multivitamin and fish oil supplements for my circulatory system.
