Taking Insulin and Losing license to Drive

If you take insulin and drive for a living you can lose your license. It is up to the patient to keep their numbers in line. My numbers go up and down. Last A1c of 9. Currently wailtig for next test to come back. My livilihood is on the line if the doctor can’t sign off on the waiver. I was wondering if anyone had or knows someone who went thru this. Is their anything I can tell my doctors that would convince him to sign off on the letter.

Generally in Indiana, if you take insulin you cannot have a CDL. The key in Indiana is the insulin not the BS. I know several people who have lost thier CDL thus their job, as a result of taking insulin.

You cannot have a CDL license in VA if you are type 1 diabetic. No way around it.

Every place is different. In Maryland like you are going through it is up to the doctor. If you have good control they will allow you to drive.

I am type II. Where I work the company wanted us to get certified to drive a Commercial motor vehicle. This is a van and 18 foot trailer that is over 10001 pounds. We haul lawn equipment around. Not a semi. All was well until the doctor giving me my physical told me because I was on insulin that I was done. On the back of the forms it says “because your taking insulin you could loose consciousness or disorientation in time and space. Individuals who require insulin for control have conditions which can get out of control by the use of too much or too little insulin, food intake not consistant with the insulin dosage. Incapacitation may occur from symptoms of hyperglycemic or hypoglycemic reactions ( drowsiness, semiconsciousness, diabetic coma or insulation shock)”.

“The administartion of insulin is, within itself a complicated process requiring insulin, syringe, needle, alcohol sponge and a sterile technique. factors related to long haul commercial motor vehicle operations such as fatigue, lack of sleep, poor diet, emotional conditions, stress and concomitant illness, compound the dangers, FMCSA has consistantly held that a diabetic who uses insulin for control does not meet the minimum physical requirements of the FMCSRs”. What a crock.

The really sad part about that, is that because of the fear of losing their livelihood, a lot of people will never seek the helps or meds they need. In return for their job, they also get debilitating complications. SAD!

or worse yet lie about their disease ot the examiner and then drive while using Insulin. I know a guy who did this and he hits and runs a car with a school bus full of kids. He had a set of nasty nasty law suits, and then of course he was arrested.

Thanks for the information. The Fed standard says between 7-10 Aic I can drive with doctors approval. My last AIc came back at 11. My doctor has changed me to actos. If this works than I can get back to work.
