The question of why

Why do some humans have heavy weights , bad eating habits and are inactive while someone thinner, better eating habits and active end up with T2?
We must play the hand we are dealt to the best of our ability because life is a gift. My Uncle died early this morning leading me to ponder why he got cancer and others don’t.
I’m sure more answers will be revealed with future research but I can’t help but wonder.

Blessings to you. I answered the Why question to my own peace of mind in 1972 when my son was stillborn at 8 months…Why not?..None of us are immune from suffering. The forms it can take are myriad, of course…Both Diabetes and Cancer manifest with a nasty Diabolical Whimsy…And science will only take us so far down the why path…

Wishing you peace and gentle days to grieve…

When I was diagnsed with cancer several years ago I asked “why me?” Eventually the answer came, “why not?” I am sure you will miss your uncle so much, but will keep him in your heart close to you for ever.

I feel your pain and I understand that you are trying to figure out they WHY of Diabetes – and I am very sorry to hear about your uncle.

HOWEVER, your question is misguided - it assumes that some people are to blame for acquiring T2 and others are not. You’ve made this into the why do bad things happen to good people question; in this scenario, the good people are thin and with “good eating habits” and the bad people are fat and inactive with bad habits.

How about - why does Diabetes happen to anyone? Does ANYONE (whether or not you agree with their lifestyle, size, or eating choices) deserve this? Could anyone really DO this to themselves?

My personal belief is genetics, runs in my family. Generations before me had it. I am sorry for the loss of your uncle. Nancy

The three factors that contribute to diabetes type 2 are genes (if other family members have diabetes type 2 chances are we are more susceptible), body weight (people with other family members with type 2 have been known to avoid the same diagnosis by staying slim) and lifestyle (a dormant, non active lifestyle while eating unhealthy carb heavy foods, when combined with genes and fat is almost guaranteed to result in type 2.) Knowing that is one thing, acting on it is another, which is why worldwide people diagnosed with type 2 are approaching the half billion mark.

There seem to be two kinds of type 2 diabetes. One related to being heavy and having insulin resistance and another type in thinner people who don’t make enough insulin. We know more about the US/European version related to insulin resistant/heavier weight, but much of South Asia (think India & China) population have the insulin production kind and get the type 2 diabetes at a lower weight.

I totally love your answer. I fall into all those places. My grandma had T2 and so do I. I don’t like like any of my family because my brother and sisters and their families are all tall and thin and healthy while I on the other hand am totally not like them. Do i blame anyone for my health issues? no. anyway good answer.

Yes my grandfather had t2 he was 6’4 and maybe 175’
Grandmother was 5-2 250 not t2
My brothers are average build not t2, my sister is 5’3" 250 not t2
I am built like my bothers, and active 70 year old and t2.
My grandfather and father and I had blue eyes, maybe that is it,
Except my Dad was not t2!
Bottom line, that I am T2, and well controlled.

Just pondering on differences and questioning cancer, diabetes, etc…my questions are not critical of anyone but realize interpretations of my questions are varied. I do love some of the wonderful replies!

To me (family had cancer) once you were diagnosed it seemed you lost control, even though After my mother’s double mastectomy she lived a long and healthy life, but all she could do is wait and see if it would reoccur.
At least I have as a t 2 many actions I can take to be healthy. And even in a t1
Now has many many new devices that one can decide to use.
Cancer? I would rather take my chances dealing with diabetes.
