This looks awry

This is my new Omnipod Dash pump receiver plugged in to the power cord.

It looks like a bad connection to me. I need to turn this thing on. Is this really how they designed it to fit or do I have bad hardware?

I also need to verify it has a battery, but its such a brittle looking piece of equipment (it looks like a cell phone). I’m afraid I’ll break it.

It does not look like a good connection

Mine doesn’t fit flush either or completely straight. My first thought was it really supposed to be like this? I really dislike the Dash PDM for numerous reasons. It is not a step up except for it being a touchscreen, but now you have to wait to touch what you want to do, and they make you go through extra steps to do the same things, so really not a step up. It really is overall just more of a hassle in many many ways. For me a big yuk! It reminds me of using the Dexcom receiver, does less for more work.

You like Omnipod 5 better? Maybe I can bump up a model. This thing isn’t charging. I’m gotta track down a rep today. It really shouldn’t be this broken the first time I plug it in. It does not inspire my confidence. I don’t think, “I’d like to trust my life to this device.”

I don’t have an Omnipod 5 so I couldn’t tell you. But seeing the Dash PDM, I doubt I would be happy with the Omni 5 PDM. Insulet doesn’t seem to really make improvements overall to the pods, PDM’s etc. I think they completely focused on doing a loop system.

The Dash is a known failure. Their gonna overnight me a new one because they swear the connection at the port is NOT supposed to be like this.

I’m not in love with the Omni 5 PDM either. People seem happy with it, but I’d just as soon return to the classic. 5 has Dexcom integration…which could be a desirable perk, but it can also a lot of PDM “policing,” that I don’t like.

@Marie20 and @mohe0001,

I have 3 words for you:

Loop.

:joy:

Seriously though, why carry around a fake PDM phone which isn’t really a phone because it can’t make calls. And it makes you do a bunch of dumb stuff you don’t want to do, just to take insulin.

Why not use your actual real phone instead, since you probably are gonna have it with you anyway?

Loop is much better than anything Insulet has.

@Eric I’m the one that doesn’t have the Apple computer. I think they made it easier to do without one and someone was even doing it for you, but now it’s become how long am I going to be on pods because I am having lots of trouble with them! I am only doing partial basal through them nowadays.

Sorry to hear that, about the pods @Marie20.

But yes, I think you can build it without a Mac pretty easily now.

Are you using Humalog with your pods?

Yes, I’m still using Humalog. I did try Novolog and the same thing happened. Half of them go sometime the second day, sometimes even within 24 hours. Then I get ones that last 3 days and the warning expiration sounds and it’s like shucks. But I am not bolusing through them anymore. So it’s literally down to using them only because of DP and swimming.

I now commonly see some insulin in the well or around the cannula so it’s some kind of tunneling/absorption issue through the pods. And they don’t completely go. Just all of a sudden I need extra insulin, change the pod and everything becomes fine until… Unfortunately I am one of those that has a huge problem with allergies so I’m sure that plays a part.

I am using Lyumjev and Afrezza for bolusing and love both of them.

I don’t have good success with the Loop algorithm.
I run manual. I don’t run any automated settings in my omnipod either, except background basal.

For some people, the default automated algos work well. But, I think they ALWAYS work well for certain segments of the population - if you have a kid with developmental disability who you just don’t have that much control over what they are eating and when you can bolus, if your in jail and you don’t have access to a PDM, or if your a1c is over 8/9, your in a nursing home or have neurological conditions like severe epilepsy that might prevent you from delivering bolus reliably - then I think you stand to benefit from an automated algorithm no matter what.

I’m not in love with using any type of cell phone as a controller/PDM because I’m really tough on hardware. A cell phone just isn’t practical because its not durable enough. Also, I can’t see the screen or push the buttons with low blood sugar. I need to be able to feel the buttons. I have an old fashioned phone with buttons on it to call 911 if I ever need to because I can do that.

That type of unreliable delivery through the hardware is AWFUL, Marie. Sometimes people go to Europe to get a different medical device that will work with their body. I’m sure you know that. I feel for ya and really sympathize and wish you could find better hardware.

I know. I miss the old PDM with the buttons!
