Tips for using Medtronic quickset?

Hello,

I'm new to using a pump and would appreciate any tips on how to insert the quickset properly. I've watched the Medtronic videos and practiced with my CDE, but I seem to keep having a problem where the cannula bends or crimps, resuling in a "no delivery" alarm. Aside from making sure to press both of the white release buttons on the quickserter at the same time, does anyone have advice on how to insert the quickset properly? (I'd be willing to do it manually - ie without the quickserter - if someone had good tips for that too/instead).

Thanks,
Jessica

Hi Jessica, I'm a new pumper and I've been having trouble with Quick sets also. Almost every quickset I have used ends up with a bent cannula. Mine are bending at the tip so I figure I must be hitting muscle.

I Called Medtronic and they sent me a sample of the different type of sets. I had the best luck with the Silhouttes and the Sure-T. I have decided to go with the Silhouttes because I like the angled insertion. It just seem less likley to hit something.

I tried the shorter quick set and it was OK but I don't like the quick-serter and even though the sil-serter looks like a harpoon gun I like it better. I also think I would like to try inserting the Silhoutte manually as shown on the support page.

I tried inserting a quick-set manually and had no better luck. Darn thing still bent at the tip.

Sorry to hear you're having this trouble too. I think I'll call Medtronic and get some samples - thanks for the idea!

Hi, thanks for your response. I am using the 6mm, so maybe I'll try some other shots. Do you ever use insert the quickset manually?

I have been pumping since 2001 , tried all the different sets ; all cannulas kinked till I read here on TuD about the Sure-T's ..I am still grateful to the chap , who posted ( sadly he is not a TuD member anymore ) ...I advanced from the 5 mm to the 8 mm some time ago . I forgot to check how many years you are living with diabetes ; I was diagnosed 30 years ago ...an likely some scar tissue has developed .My " new " place of inserting the infusion set is below the breast , meaty part , away from the rib cage ...I need to work next on the basal settings as I am having too many lows :( All the Best from across the line

Avoid using any skin prep (such as skin tac) before insertion. Once I stopped using a skin prep, I have pretty much avoided most bent cannulas. Pinch to insert also, I have a greater success rate if I pinch with insertion instead of just placing the quickserter at the site and hitting the release buttons. I have used both 9mm and 6mm, and until I quit using skin prep, I had similar bent cannula problems. I can insert manually, but I find the quickserter is so much easier! Good luck!

I don't think it's scar tissue; I suppose it could be muscle. My CDE thought that might be the case.

Thanks Nel. Good look with your basals!

Interesting! Thanks Korrie. I will try it without the prep.
