Today

Today was my first birthday, on which I did not eat my own birthday cake. My first birthday since the diagnosis. And you know what? I didn’t even miss it!

Good for you, Smile. There are other ways to celebrate your B-day than cake.

I smiled when I read this. Score: You=1, birthday cake = a big fat zero. Diabetes you are going DOWN!!!

Can’t you have just one bite of your birthday cake?! I do! Am I the only diabetic that still eats minimal amounts of sugar every once in a blue moon?

But did you celebrate? You may choose to never have cake again, but you should never compromise on your happiness. On your birthday you “should” celebrate and do things that make you happy and eat things you love. It is ok to love to eat, it is one of life’s pleasures. You don’t have to overdo it to enjoy.

In my case, I also don’t really do cake’s anymore. I choose other foods that are friendly and that I love. And that is ok. On my birthday, I get to choose, cause it is my special day to be happy.

I recently went to a birthday party and was looking forward to that small piece of cake for a sweet treat. I was totally disappointed. I have not eaten sugar in so many months that the taste was actually NASTY. I have no problem with a bight or two here and there, but I find baked goods just don’t cut it any more. I had some flan a while back and it was great. but things like cookies (a former food group for me) and cake are no longer appealing.

It was a really good birthday, despite of the date. Lots of congratulations, love and sweet people. Breakfast in the garden. A lovely day, filled with things to be grateful for…

No Lynne, can’t bolus because I am not on insulin…
