TuAnalyze Application: Lessons Learned

Starting this summer, the platform that TuDiabetes runs on will start undergoing updates that will make the site easier to use, simplify the site layout, and improve the way it works across multiple devices. Unfortunately, in connection with the upcoming changes to the platform the TuAnalyze app will no longer be compatible with TuDiabetes. As this coincides with the end of our 5-year grant from the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to develop TuAnalyze, we will be taking down the app on July 1, 2013.

We would like to offer our tremendous thanks to the communities of TuDiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org for their participation in this research. Nearly 4,000 members of the TuDiabetes community participated in the project, and their donated data have been the centerpiece of three peer-reviewed scientific papers (on A1c values, care patterns, and hypoglycemia), as well as numerous abstracts and conference presentations. We look forward to working with Diabetes Hands Foundation to identify new ways for the TuDiabetes community to contribute to valuable, cutting edge diabetes research.

Below is some information on the details of the “decommissioning” of TuAnalyze. If you have any additional questions, please put them in the comments or email the study team at tuanalyze@chip.org.

FAQs

What will happen to my data that is in TuAnalyze?

After July 1, any data that you have entered into TuAnalyze, including A1c values and survey responses, will no longer be viewable through TuDiabetes. We will download all entered data from our secure servers at Boston Children’s Hospital and then shut down the servers.

Will my data remain secure?

Yes. Once the TuAnalyze servers are shut down the full data set will be maintained on a secure, password-protected computer at Boston Children’s Hospital, and will only be accessible to the TuAnalyze study team. All of the data that you enter in TuAnalyze are stored with a randomized ID number—once the app is taken down, we will destroy the link between this ID number and your identity on TuDiabetes, effectively anonymizing the data set.

I have chosen to display my A1cs entered in TuAnalyze on my TuDiabetes profile—will these still show up?

No, data entered into TuAnalyze will no longer be visible on TuDiabetes.org.

Can I update my data before the app is taken down?

Yes, we encourage you to add your latest A1c into TuAnalyze before July 1, so that the final data set on TuDiabetes members is as complete as possible! If there are any surveys that you have not yet taken, you may complete those as well; however, it is not possible to go back and edit any surveys you have already completed.

Where can I see some results of the TuAnalyze project?

Below are a set of links to all of the results that we have presented so far from TuAnalyze. We will update the community if any additional papers are published.

I would recommend to make the source code available on Github. Perhaps some geeks here have the time and motivation to revive the project. Sure the API might have changed now but it is always helpful to see how specific problems habe been solved to integrate with ning - the system behind TuDiabetes. Since DHF has payed for the project (with grands) the copyright of the source code should be no problem.
