1.How many years have you had type 1 diabetes? 2.Have you ever been in DKA?
What was your highest blood glucose?
3.Have you ever passed out from a low? How low were you?
4.Your #1 tip for other diabetics
Much love and hugs for those of you struggling with this daily disease! YOU ARE A FIGHTER!!!
1. I have been type 1 (LADA) for 3 years, on insulin for 2. 2. Never, my diabetes was caught very early and hopefully NEVER! My highest blood glucose ever was 380.
3. Never passed out, my lowest bs was 52.
4. EAT LESS CARBS, TAKE LESS INSULIN, MAKE LESS MISTAKES!! Thanks Dr. Bernstein!
1. Since 1984 2. Not since DX, maybe 450? I don't have that many b/c I'm pretty on top of it. During my wilder years, if it got up around 200, I'd use IV R shots to get it down quickly, which is extremely dangerous 3. Yes, I don't know about that, since I was passed out, the paramedics would always go "you were at 47 after dextrose..." or whatever but my Medtronic UltraSmart meter I had a couple of years ago had several single digit readings, like 7 and 12s, 20s, etc. I was bombed out of my gourd, of course but had to test first...d'oh! 4. Test a lot and fight for your right to test if you encounter resistance. I think that restrictions on test strips deserve a class action suit one of these days but it would take the appropriate circumstances I think.
1). 26 years 2). Yes...this is how I was Dx. 3). Yes
4). Never think you are less than a whole person, you can achieve anything, do not stick your head in the sand, never stop leaning forward...."Oh I forgot...and World Peace"
1. since 2004 2. never, highest bg maybe around 30 mmol/l (around 540 mg/dl)
3. no, never
4. STAY POSITIVE!!!! The key of managing diabetes is your positive attitude. no matter how good or bad your bgs are today, dont let it pull you down!!!
1. In three weeks it will be 22 years with Type 1.
2. When diagnosed, never since. Although there have been two times in my life I have been very close. Highest blood sugar has been >33 mmol/L (>600 mg/dl), or HI on the glucose meter ... several times. (I don't know what my blood sugar was when diagnosed.)
3. Yes, numerous lows when I was a teenager led to either passing out, not waking up in the morning, or being completely out of it and wandering around aimlessly unable to treat myself or communicate. No one ever tested me during these times, they were too busy trying to make me eat something or calling ambulances, so I don't know how low I was. The lowest reading I ever got from a glucose meter was several readings of <1.1 mmol/L (<20 mg/dl) or LO. I did get one reading of 0.6 mmol/L (11 mg/dl) once as well.
4. Take things one day at a time. It is WAY too overwhelming to think in terms of "forever." Sometimes I have to take it a reading at a time, even facing an entire day is too much!
3. I have not passed out, but I have had one episode that I could not remember. My BG was 25. I was told that I was answering questions appropriately, but I had no memory of about five minutes.
1. 4 years 2. borderline dka at diagnosis. 500+
3. No. Lowest I've been is 42.
4. Find a doctor who will diagnose you correctly and isn't afraid to order lab work.
1. I've been Type 1 for 6 years, was misdiagnosed for first 18 months 2. Never been in DKA
I believe my highest was somewhere around 425.
3. Yes, I passed out (due to not knowing what I was doing). I was 34 when I came to and tested. I've also been 28 and fully aware.
4. Do the best you can and don't blame yourself if you're not perfect, just learn what you can from it.
2. Twice, once to pneumonia & forgetting to take my insulin & once while I was in hospital being tested for celiac, I was trying to swallow the biopsy capsule, it wouldn't go down & I hadn't eaten & hadn't been given insulin. No idea, they didn't have BG meters for my 1st 20 years. Since then 400-500.
3. Never passed out from a low. Lowest I can recall was 23, I was still aware but a bit confused. Never had to call paramedics either.
4. Enjoy life, if you obey the rules you can do nearly everything I've never let it stop me. Tell your friends & colleagues they want to help.
1. Since Dec. 1962 as a 7 yr old. 2.Yes as an eight year old or so I am guessing. Still love peanut butter cups. Mom pointed out that they cost about $200. a piece. No ins. so made sure never to make that mistake again. 3.Many times as a little kid. Would wake up and wonder what happened. Lowest official reading was at the ER and that was 27. I was pre pump and bolused too soon was in my late 40s and I was going to walk home did not need any help, still fight any assistance but getting better. Still not sure how that nurse scooped me up with a wheel chair and got me in the ER.4.Find a Dr. that will listen. Test lots. And good luck.
1.How many years have you had type 1 diabetes? 51 2.Have you ever been in DKA? No
What was your highest blood glucose? Don't really know, but 280 is a best guess
3.Have you ever passed out from a low? How low were you? Yes, when I was 14--long time ago. We did not have BG meters at the time. I know I have been awake and as low as 10.
4.Your #1 tip for other diabetics Relax. It is never level, there is always a surprise around the corner. Just do your best and forgive yourself when things don't work the way you think they should.
1. 40 years 2. yes
3. 1134
3 yes lets see the lowest I was was around 15 but usually pass out around 21
4. DON'T LET D RULE UR LIFE!!!! theres much to do out there!
1. This year marks 16 years 2. Borderline DKA in 2008 due to improper placing of my pump
Highest blood sugar: over 600
3. Lowest I have ever been is 35, but have never passed out due to low
4. Don't let the number define you!
1. Been diagnosed 7 years, certain I've had it at least 9 years. 2. Was in DKA at diagnosis only; was 453 fasting at the time. Highest I've been measured at was 594, but I'm sure I've been higher.
3. No. The lowest I've measured is 23, and I have hallucinated in the 30s and 40s on four occasions.
4. Change things up enough to keep it interesting.
1. 2 years 2. No. close at dx, my meter read HI at the dr's office(600+). A lot of people thought I should have been in the hospital. No bgs in the last year and a half over 200.
3. No but close again. Lowest was a couple months after dx, mid 30s after blousing way too much for pizza. Can usually catch my lows before they get much below mid 40s.
4a. Eat to your meter! 4b. Don't let diabetes control your life!
4c. take advantage of all the great technology available to us today(cgms, pumps, etc..as long as you can afford it)!
1.23
2. Yes, due to tooth absis infection - ignored /sent home by ER
No idea. 33mmol when dx but have been off the meter scale at times
3.I think I did once - woke up on floor but I think my liver kicked in. Otherwise, my lowest has been 2.8mmol.
4.If you’re a teenager (or goingto be one), just don’t think you can cheat. 10 years later you’ll regret that more than you can ever imagine.
Accept that diabetes WILL rule your life to an extent, but that’s not a bad thing…it’s a reason to have a good healthy life!
