Type 1 diabetic pregnancies

Hi all!
Wondering if it is possible to carry a baby to term with having type 1 diabetes for 24 years. Been thinking and wondering if I am going to have children, and met a man I would seriously consider it with (love him!) Wondering if any ladies on this site had difficult pregnancies, horror stories and such. Just wondering. I would love to hear about them! Thanks!

You can do it, I have the slow onset of Type 1! I did and there are many other Type 1 mommies here who have. Most Doctor’s like for your A1C to be under 6.0. I think the hardest thing was maintaining TIGHT control! With prayer and my husband it was great. My OB induced me at 37 weeks. I had a C-section because she was face up. Niya was 6lbs 2oz when she was born.

Hi Carrie!! Check out the group Oh!Baby!. There lots of women considering pregnancy and women who have been through pregnancy. It is definitely possible! Of course, it requires a lot of preparation and precaution, but you can talk to a lot of women who have had very healthy diabetic pregnancies! A few other sites to check out:
Diabetic sisters
Positive Diabetic Pregnancies (Yahoo Mail group-- you can get lots of info from current pregnant women (most with type 1) and details about their pregnancies).

We are planning to have children in the next couple years… so I am doing my research and getting ready  Would be happy to talk to you about it more!! But you should keep the option open… especially if he’s a great guy!

Sorry the link that I put for Diabetic sisters is not right. It’s DiabetesSisters.

Hi Carrie! I was diagnosed over 22 years ago. I have 2 beautiful, healthy children (5 & 3). They were both born at seven pounds. I developed preeclampsia in my first pregnancy and they had to induce early. My premature daugther had to stay in NICU for a few days because her lungs weren’t fully developed and she was having apnea episodes. It was the HARDEST thing for my husband and me to leave her at the hospital when it was time for me to go home! Other than this, absolutely no problems! My pregnancies were really very simple. I went to a perinatologist (they specialize in maternal/fetal care and are used in “high risk” pregnancies). My peri used to say that I was the model T1 patient because I had bG levels better than his! Be ready to go to the doctor all the time! You will have appointments in the last couple of months like once a week. The first month (as far as diabetes is concerned) be prepared to fight some stubbornly high blood sugars! You’ll want to watch very carefully as you do not want to spill ketones ever! There was also a period where my insulin needs went down a bit and I was having quite a few lows.

I wish you the best of luck!! I would be glad to answer any questions you might have!

Thinking of trying for a third baby. I was diagnosed as a type 1 after my second child was born, so the idea of pregnancy with diabetes is a little scary. My most recent a1c was 7.1. Working to get it closer to 5.5 before trying. So scared if this is a huge mistake to have another child and looking for support from those who have done it and had healthy babies. There is so much out there online that is freightening!
