I had two flats today… the first was a flat tire. The second was my blood sugar while I was changing the tire. Nothing like standing on the side of the freeway munching on a granola bar before getting the spare on. Life with diabetes is grand adventure.
Anyone one else have a time when you’ve done everything right and life made you go low?
I don’t have any one experience going low at an inconvenient time that comes to mind, but I get it. It might happen in a social situation when you want to be at the top of your game. Or maybe while traveling internationally and going through immigration and customs when you don’t want to draw unnecessary attention.
I target normal blood glucose levels so I don’t have much of a cushion before hypos start to incapacitate my brain and body. Because I live with good diabetes technology, I get a fair warning before things can get dangerous.
The more common lows for me are the ones < 65 mg/dL but still above 54 mg/dL. I take action at 65 but then take drastic action at the much less frequent 54. My lifestyle factors are such that my glucose variability is low, non-diabetic normal. I used to experience crashing white-knuckle descents into hypo-land but that part of my life is over.
Congrats on being prepared with your granola bar and treating both your car-flat and diabetes-flat safely and effectively!
I just posted my motto, “Every day is a new day with diabetes.” I have to amend that with can be new minute to minute.
Like Terry I prefer my BG very close to normal. For years if was very stable and I knew exactly what to do before a bike ride or other physical activity to stay >70 and <140mg/dl. Recent events have destabilized my control. My endo still thinks I’m doing well but not to my standards.
Not a low story although I have had plenty. Just had lunch with a friend who I recently traveled with. She said boy diabetes is a lot of work. Yep it is
