Is anyone taking Victoza or will be or has been? Can you please tell me your experiences?
I used both Byetta and Victoza. I didn't really have any nausea which seems to be the most common side effect. Unfortunately, neither really helped me in the long term, but I've heard others who have had great success. There is a group on Victoza and you may find the discussion there helpful. It might also be useful to check out the Byetta group as both of those drugs are GLP-1 analogs.
I take Victoza. Most of the side effects I had went away. I had nausea and was extremely tired. They disappeared after about 4 weeks. (They did come back when I changed doses.) The side effect that has not disappeared is constipation. It has helped my blood sugars after meals a lot. In the mornings, not so much. I just had my first A1C after 4 months on Victoza and it had come down quite a bit.
I had fairly severe side effects initially. Bad headache that lasted an hour or two after injection, stomach cramps, and severe tiredness. I had read other peoples experiences and was prepared for them, for instance I started on a day I did not have to work. The second day was less severe than the first and after a month I was well adapted except for some lingering tiredness. It has made a dramatic difference in my blood sugars, it also makes you feel full when eating which means I lost a little weight and that is always beneficial for a T2. I've been on it 2 + years, and have no lingering side effects. Some find it looses it effectiveness over time. It has been my observation that utilizing as much real estate as you can for your injection sites seems to help keep it effective.
There have been some questions about it's safety. I researched this and decided the evidence was weak and that the benefits outweighed risks. Others could come to the opposite conclusion from reading the same evidence.
I think that on their medical professional site, they have listed that there is a 29% side effect rating. I've been taking it for over a month now. It's brought my sugars down tremendously. I'm also dropping a little bit of weight now. I'm only on the 1.2 mg dose, not the 1.8. And I know some people who have had some pretty bad side effects, but none here. :)
