Vitaligo

Hello all, I realized that I am developing vitiligo on my legs, just small white patches that I can see pretty easily because I get a lot of sun in the summer.

Anyway I researched it a but and it’s an autoimmune disease and it’s closely correlated to type 1 diabetes.

It’s odd be cause I had eczema another autoimmune disease 20 years ago but it seems to have disappeared.

Does anyone know about this , does it mean my immune system is getting ramped up? I made an appointment w my doctor because what I’ve read suggests I need to see a Doctor to rule out something more serious. which I understand because I had cancer when I was in my 20 s. And again 2 yers ago both of which has so far completely resolved

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this related to type 1 and I also thought it only affected dark skin people, but I’m Northern European so it’s just one of those things

Maybe it’s just more noticeable on darker skin. .

It sounds benign but I wonder if this is something other type 1s are dealing with.

Pretty sure there are no other posts about it on here

I have vitaligo on my arms. It started about 7 or 8 yrs ago. I notice it in the summer. I had read here I think that it isn’t unusual for type 1’s to have it. I have never asked a doctor about it. I get a few more white spots every year. It doesn’t bother me at 74, but I am glad that I didn’t get it until I was older.

Yep. I’ve had vitiligo since way before I got T1. I am/was blond with red hair in the family, and very fair. The white spots only showed during the summer when I was exposed to the sun. I burned very easily so my exposure was very brief. Nothing to do about it except to stay covered and lathered in sunscreen. Mine showed up on my arms and the back of my neck. Probably the only places I could not protect from the rays. Quite a minor impact on my life.
