This week when the weather soared into the 80 degree mark I was having a hard time avoiding low bloodsugars.I tried increasing my carb ratio and I was still having lows.I don't remember ever having a bad time as this since I have been on the pump.Did anyone else experience the same problems?
Here's the story I share when this topic comes up. I lived in a place with mild temps and went for a vacation to a hot and humid beach. I walked down the beach to a place that was known for handmade ravioli. I decided to treat myself to something I rarely eat. I ordered and then took my pen out to bolus and the needle broke. I didn't have any other with me and it was a (hot) 15 minute walk back down the beach to my hotel so I figured I'd eat and then bolus back at my room to correct the outrageous high I expected. It never came and I was low most of that weekend despite drastically decreased insulin use.
I'm now living somewhere where it gets very hot in the summer for the first time since diagnosis. I'm interested to see what happens come summer! I just had a thought though: I wonder if this only happens when you have a sudden increase in temperature?
It happens when the temperature goes up like it did recently but it usually goes up gradually so I have time to test and reduce my numbers.The sudden increase of temperatures just makes it harder to to do basal tests and plus I was working and tend to have exercise related lows.Sometimes I have a high and I will take a correction and go low from that.I know the solution is easy.Just reduce my insulin our increase my carb intake but I can't always go with what I record in my logbook.My work is not always as hard as other days.I am a housekeeper at a motel and if I get alot of checkouts then I know I will be using alot more sugar.If I get alot of stays I usually only have to do a small reduction in my noon bolus.I sure will be glad when this weather will decide Winter or Spring!
I used a summer /winter basal rate at one time , while it worked ...weather has been less extreme here during the seasons . I did set temp basals ( lower ) while on vacation in Waikiki this past month . I seem to be sensative to temperature changes even prior to pumping and recall bad lows while visiting the Plains of Abraham , Quebec , July 1 late
