What do you miss about not having D?

I was thinking what i missed about not beging diabetic. At first i could not come up with anything, but then i thought the thing i missed the most is not having to worry. Not having to worry about how many carbs are in something, about what my bood sugar is. I don't really think that a teenager should have to worry about their health so much. So what do miss the most? If you were diagnosed when you were to young to remeber then just think about what you hate the most about D.

-Sydney :D

Eating fresh hot donuts with my staff every friday.

After 36 years there isn’t really thing I hate, but it would be nice to have invested (other then in my health) every dollar I’ve spent in co-pays over the years.

Sweets and drinking (i.e. getting drunk, not extremely, but enough to make me feel silly). Hands down. And not having to think twice about good, heart-rate raising exercise – I’m type 1. But I’m very lucky in that I was diagnosed at 42, so I got to do these things for a while without any concern whatsoever. At this point, I’m just glad that I have a condition that I can manage, that isn’t necessarily terminal. It could be (as always) worse.

I miss being able to do things without planning them out way in advance. It just gets old to not be able to go do something on the spur of the moment. Managing diabetes takes thinking things out in advance, and I miss the spontaneity of life that is has taken away to some degree…

Wow, writing that out right there kind of hit me harder than I thought. :frowning:

Amen to that, guys. I hate having to plan ahead for everything.

I HATE having to eat when I am not hungry.
I went to the state fair recently. I took less long term b/c I knew it would be hot and we woudl be walking. I drank 2-32 oz lemonades and ate a fruit plate by myself without having to take short term. Oh, and I still had to take some glucose tabs. Heat drops my bg something crazy.

test treat and eat, over and over from dawn to dusk

me too!! i totally hate eating when im not hungry and i hate glouclose tablets!

Great question Sydney! Let me think about it for a day or so…

Yeah, the results of NOT eating when you’re not hungry – 5 Lifesavers, asap. Then feeling crappy for a while. It does suck.

This.

CHOCOLATE!!! i know i can still have it now , but not in the vast quantities i used to have.

(sorry if i gave anyone chocolate cravings)

For me, there are really only two things I miss. The first thing for me, is the cost of all the supplies and having to make sure they are always within reach. Second is the worrying about the next BG test. Is it high? Am I going to go low with this exercise?

Turning the question the other way, I think counting carbs every meal is great. It’s something that more people should do just because it would help people eat more healthy. Counting carbs helps you not over eat. It’s too easy to eat way too many carbs. Half a bag of chips is like a whole days worth, and people eat this for a snack. It’s really makes you aware of what your taking in.

CHOCOLATE IN LARGE QUANTITIES!!!

I miss being able to just down to eat.

I’m reminded of it every time I have to get back up again to find my BG kit and test.

There is nothing not to hate about having diabetes IMO. It all sucks but I could live in peace with it If I just didn’t feel the sugar swings. I feel run down physically and more so emotionally from even minor fluctuations. If I felt fine regardless of where my levels were life would be so much more peaceful. I pretty much eat whatever I want in somewhat moderate portions and don’t terribly mind the shots but I get some serious mood swings and feelings of hopelessness which in turn has destroyed the my quality of life. I am eagerly waiting for Smart Insulin or another form a true regulating therapy. To anwer your question I don’t think its possible to not miss something you currently can’t get rid of.

Freedom!

I most of all miss just being able to workout and do things WHEN I WANT TO. I can’t stand not being able to exercise within two hours of eating, or having to eat because I am exercising…or shoving my mouth with food every hour while snowboarding and not being able to “feel the burn” while exercising without worrying if I am low.

UGH!

Ya, it gets a bit overwhelming at times :frowning:

Ya i know! i always think well how many calories am i really burning when i have to eat something just so i don’t pass out! i hate having to bring snacks to volleyball and softball practrice too!
