What's a good new meter?

What can you guys recommend for a new meter. I’m NOT worried about the cost that much of meter or test strips. I just want one that is convienent and accurate and uses a small amount of blood. I’m looking at the Contour USB. Anyone here have this? What other new ones do you guys like? And what ones should I stay away from? I know in a way they are all the same to most people but I just wanted to get a few opinions before I upgrade.

First thing I would do is look at some existing discussions by going to groups like Bayer USB users or One Touch Users.

Next thing, if you have insurance, see what is considered “formulary”. For my insurance, some strips have a $15 copay, while others have a $75 copay. Eveon though the initial cost of a meter might be higher, the thing that really hurts me is the extra $60/month.

I own the OneTouch Ultra Smart which is nice because, like a pump, it will keep track of carbs, activity, bg, insulin, if you like. I am not on a pump, and love it. I also have a OneTouch mini so for those times I don’t want to lug the Ultra Smart around with me, I can travel a little lighter. They don’t require much blood.

I did get a Freestyle Navigator which, like the Dexcom, from what I understand is crazy accurate, but it requires that you use Freestyle strips. The new Freestyle strips might even require less blood than the One Touch which is crazy good. Not sure about the blood requirements for other strips.

I was wondering about anything that just came out in the last few months or maybe something coming really soon.

I don’t use anything the insurance pays for because they are the cheapest meters with the most inaccurate test strips that seem to require a huge amount of blood. I’m used to buying meters and test strips for several years. I just want something small, and reliable. Many years ago they paid for good meters and lots of strips but now it’s all very generic and I haven’t been happy with it, so I just buy the strips myself.

I’ll look into the onetouch ultra smart. I never did all that with a meter. I keep looking at the contour USB everytime I go to the pharmacy. I was thinking of giving it a try later this month. I will check out that group also.
