Which Bernstein book to buy?

I’ve seen several references to Bernstein’s book. I looked at Barnes & Noble and there are two: Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein’s Low Carbohydrate Solution, and the other one is called Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution. As a newly diagnosed Type 2, which book should I get? Thanks!

Patricia

Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution is the classic one, which has the most information about diabetes specifically. Some portions of it focus a lot on insulin use, which may or may not be applicable to you at this time, but a lot of the information is applicable to all types of diabetes. When people say to get the Bernstein book, this is the one they’re talking about. You can preview parts of it at his website, http://www.diabetes-book.com/.

The Diabetes Diet focuses more on the carb-control portion of his method, and less on balancing that against insulin use; it also includes a lot of recipes, so if that’s of interest to you this might be a good choice also.

Another book I’ve found helpful is Gretchen Becker’s Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year. I also really like Jenny Ruhl’s site, Blood Sugar 101, and it’s available in a book version if you’re more comfortable with that.

For low-carb eating, I found Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades’ Protein Power very helpful; in particular, it explains the actions of insulin in the body aside from its effects on blood glucose, and it explains why eating low-carb and high-fat improves cholesterol ratios rather than making them worse, which is really helpful if you’re banging your head against someone trying to get you to eat the ADA diet for cardiovascular reasons.

I read Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution. Very very good book. i learnt a lot with it.

Thank you so much for your reply. I was beginning to think nobody was going to respond! I love to read, so I’m going to take a look at these books.

What she said! Sara listed all my favs!

Diabetes Solution FTW!!

Sorry…can’t figure out what FTW means!

What is FTW? thank you

FTW = For The Win

It is an expression of enthusiasm. “FTW” is the same as saying “this is the best” or “this item will make a big difference, I recommend using it”. Examples would include: “anti-lock braking, ftw!”, “spellchecker, ftw!”, and “low-carb diets, ftw!”

Dr Bernstein"s Diabetes Soulution is the first book I bought. Very good framework. I’m now rereading it. Also Dr. Barry Sears, " The Zone Diet" gives a good explanation of the different hormones in our bodies and why we have to eat low carb to optimise them. After being diagnosed with T 2 I find there is a lot more to eating than I thour=ght.
