WHy I'm Here

I just dated someone recently who had diabetes, and was just poking
around reading articles and what not because although I worked in
Dialysis for 4 years, and had to deal with a lot of people who had
diabetes, I never fully understood the disease very much, the lifestyle, or knowing someone closely who has it.

Aside from helping the person through two minor low-blood-sugar moments and recently hearing about another where she was hospitalized, my most
disturbing experience was in the clinic I worked at a few years ago with a certain patient who needed to have
most of one of his lower legs amputated due to low circulation. The
next day he didn’t come in, then the day after someone found him out at
his private pond dead in his fishing boat. Because he couldn’t take the
pain of living anymore, he ended his life. This started a great moral argument within the work staff, and shortly after, I stopped working in dialysis.

After some checking around, it turns out two of my classmates in animation school were diabetic, which is why they were frequently under the weather. Its funny how you take these things for granted, and how the people affected make it an active choice to not let anyone know their condition, even though it’s easy help them along. In my case, I would have been happy to take notes for those two friends of mine or even be a more dedicated s/o had I known, but such is the passage of time. Better late than never to learn these things just in case I have to encounter diabetes again in the future, if ever.

Thanks for the interest and support. Welcome Doz!

Wow…amazing. I sure do wish there were more people like you. Nice to have you here.

Hi Doz! I applaud you for your curiosity, wanting to learn more about diabetes, and your support!

Thank you. =)

There’s nothing else to say but that and of course, welcome to TuD! =)

The whole process of why the immune system is responsible for causing diabetes fascinates me. Like, cow’s milk I would have never guessed. Virii, pathogen, and toxin influence seem to make a lot of sense. I wonder if it’s possible for scientists to create a anti-toxin or pathogen that reverses the effect and makes the body rebuild the pancreas.

Hi Doz… interesting… that would be a study I would be interested to find answers for … although, I hear there’s a lot of talk for Stem Cell research regarding diabetes… I’m still on the fence on that…

Thank you for taking the time to inform yourself and in so doing being supportive to ALL people with diabetes. I believe, one perosn at a time will change the world for people with diabetes.

Hi Doz,
Happy Birthday! Hope you are doing well.
I just read the sad story that you posted. I think it’s great that you have joined this site to learn more about diabetes. Thanks so much for sharing. Joanne.
