Why it is important to wash hands before testing BG!

I was shocked when my pump meter read:

“BG reading higher than 500 mg/dl”…I said OMG!!!

I relaxed and went washed my hand and came back and tested…This time it was 321 mg/dl…big relief …it is high…but not rocket high…

From 500 to 321…That is 179mg/dl

So please kids…wash you hands before doing anything…we are sooo sweet!!

Lotions also do the same thing, so if you put lotions on your hands, those can affect the readings. Took me forever to realize that lotion was raising my bg significantly, b/c with some lotions you have to wash like crazy to get that junk off.

also make sure your meter is calibrated with the control solution! and if you have codes on it make sure its coded properly also…

Yep, I had a similar experience when I tested while making lunch of crackers, nut butter and spreadable fruit. The spreadable fruit gave me a blood sugar over 400 and I screamed before I remembered.

Not sure I would agree that 321 isn’t rocket high, though!

I check my sugar so often (sometimes upwards of 10 times per day). I can’t imagine washing my hands each time. If I had a result come back WAY OUT OF WHACK (like author described) I would definately wash and re-test.
